I just saw a report on CNN (not found on website yet) that the US taxpayers paid to pave a new highway between Kabul and Kandahar that has now been taken over by the Taliban. They have set up checkpoints, and outside of Kabul, it is under Taliban control. Looks like we paid hundreds of millions of dollars to build a highway for use by our enemies.

You tell me. Don't you consider this a pathetic waste of our taxpayer funds? We can build a highway and essentially give it to the Taliban, but we cannot afford health care for Americans? Man, are our national priorities messed up.

It hasnt' been "given" to the Taliban. It was taken over by them. The appropriate response is to engage the Taliban and take back that portion of the country for the Afghan government.

Notice the qualifying word "essentially". Just another evidence that we should have focused on Afghanistan and not be misdirected to invade Iraq as the center of the so-called "War on Terror". I agree, we need to eradicate these evil folks from the face of the earth.

I am surprised MP you would give attention to the failings of this current admin in Afghanistan. Regardless we have no business giving people health care.

Well, we disagree on both counts. It was the previous administration that took their eye off the ball, while the current one is refocusing on Afghanistan. And you know where I stand on national, universal healthcare.

I agree. A complete waste of bloodshed. Our correct response would be to march out. But Bush, Clinton, Gore, Cheney & the rest of the liars have worked too hard to put us in there, and nobody wants the retreat to be hung around their neck. Our troops are reduced to nothing more than a way to win elections.

Couldn't disagree more. Iraq was ruled by a Hitleresque dictator who killed a million of his own people. It was right to remove him. The Iraqi government is now our ally, and they are asking for our help. It's reasonabel for us to do so. Our mistake was not going in, our mistake was hanging out hat on WMD. We should simply have hung our hat on Saddam Hussein's atrocities against his own people.

Going into Afghanistan was likewise appropriate, and staying to assist their government is likewise reasonable.

On the other hand, if Carter hadn't made such a mess, Reagan wouldn't have gotten elected.

I was under the impression that Bush I did not invade Iraq, because the agreement with the other Arab countries was to simply get Saddam out of Kuwait. So it was more of a international agreement...

I couldn't disagree more. This was a poorly thought-out exercise. It is not our job to police the world. I think it's especially stupid when our own cities are run by gangs made up of illegal immigrants. Our own borders are wide-open, and we worry about Iraq, These wars have cost us in blood & money, and our troops are used as pawns in political posturing. I don't blame Bush, solely. This was a most bi-partisan mistake.
