I was at the dentist this am (had a tooth pulled last week). As I was leaving a Medicaid patient came in. The desk was having trouble understand him as he speaks virtually no English. One employee said that there are interrupters - but the patient may only entitled to have the service for one year. Upon hearing that, the other employee said "that just anint right"

    thoughts?

If I go to France, Spain, Greece, Japan, Brazil, Peru, Poland, Mexico, or Germany will they supply a government paid interperter for a year?

A requirement of citizenship is to know and speak English. It may not be right in the opinion of some but it ain't his right.

Police will tell you some die because they don't understand English in a hot situation and do not follow commands.

Seems it ought to be an American's right to order at a fast food joint in his native tongue and not have to point to pictures to get his order in :-(

If it is this man's right to have translation why shouldn't I have the same service provided to me?

    Come on!!!!

The way to solve this dilemma is-------simply stop going to the dentist!!! See??? If you hadn't gone to the dentist in the first place you wouldn't have known the government supplied everybody an interpreter----I mean, I'm from south Louisiana and my wife is from Alabama----and sometimes I need an interpreter just to understand what she's sayin'------see what I'm sayin??

    IOW---it anint right----but---its a free country!!!

So is the problem the person's lack of ability in the English language? There are native born citizens who do not speak English. In your zeal to discriminate, perhaps you should slow down and learn all the facts.

I'm curious: Those who agree "that just ain't right," are you agreeing because the destitute dental patient only gets the service for a year, or because he's obviously a suspect in Medicare fraud for perhaps (and likely) being undocumented?

"So is the problem the person's lack of ability in the English language?"

If someone says stop, they don't, they get shot - yep that is a problem.

"There are native born citizens who do not speak English."

May not speak it but with out school system I doubt many couldn't if they wanted to..

"In your zeal to discriminate, perhaps you should slow down and learn all the facts. "

If you have facts lay them out for everyone's enlightenment and stop falsely accusing folks.

The burden of proof is on those making assertions. I am merely pointing out that some here, including you, are going off half cocked and ignorant of the facts.

I believe that if you're dumb enough to come to an English speaking country without learning to speak English, then you deserve what you get.

In all fairness, I also believe there should be a moratorium on immigration altogether.

I'm currently working as a consultant for a company that owns several franchises of nationally known hardware stores. I was in the store one day and all of the kids (it's a college town and everybody who works there is 21 and under) called out to go to a music festival, so the manager asked if I'd help out.

A Mexican family came in to buy a tractor and the only one who spoke even a little English was the daughter, who was about eight years old.

So here I am trying to explain the intricacies of a 24hp, Briggs and Stratton Platinum engine Craftsman tractor to an eight year old, who can't even understand English, much less, the technical details of what I'm trying to tell the father through her, about the tractor. It was ridiculous.

At one point, she said, "He wants to know, what is 'cc'".

I responded that "cc" means cubic centimeters and that refers to how much air is drawn into the... and her eyes completely glazed over.

All I could think was "This poor family and my poor country".

In what manner am I half cocketd and ignorant of the facts?

I said: "A requirement of citizenship is to know and speak English. It may not be right in the opinion of some but it ain't his right." This is taught in most any high school civics class (Used to be anyway. Still was law about a year ago when I checked.)

"Police will tell you some die because they don't understand English in a hot situation and do not follow commands." This has happened in our city and have heard of it on the news in other cities.

"Seems it ought to be an American's right to order at a fast food joint in his native tongue and not have to point to pictures to get his order in :-( "

This is simply my opinion, nothing constitutional I know but seems like a logical item.

I taught a computer class for low income folks and several were non-English speakers and told me they took the class as an aid to learn English. Often as their eyes glazed over I would go back and ask where I lost them and go over the item in more detail.

Gotta give them credit for trying to remedy their situation.
