1 ¶ And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters:
2 With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.
3 So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.
4 And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication:
5 And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH
    .

    Who is she?

    1. She cannot be secular government(s) because she is distinguished from "the kings of the earth" and she "sits upon" what symbolizes secular governments of the earth - "beast" as the seven heads of this beast are also representative of "kings".

    2. She cannot be secular Rome or the secular Roman Empire which was destroyed and overthrown in 452 A.D. because she continues to exist into the very last "hour" of the earth when the ten kings WHICH DID NOT EXIST WHEN JOHN WROTE THIS BOOK and yet form the horns on the last head of the beast, are led by the anti-christ into battle against Christ as He comes from heaven:

12 And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast.
13 These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast.
14 ¶ These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.

However, the Biblical text does identify this woman very clearly:

    1. She is MYSTICAL BABYLON or the RELIGION OF BABYLON - the MYSTERY RELIGION.

    2. She is that city that was reigning over the kings of the earth when John wrote this book which was the seat of the Mystery Babylon Religion adopted by the Roman government.

    3. She is the murderer of all the saints on the face of the earth including the apostles. Thus she precedes and exceeds the Roman Government and its empire. She is institutionalized false religion that has followed the way of Cain since the garden of Eden responsible for the death of the first prophet of God and will be responsible for the death of all the saints upon the earth.

    4. She rides the beast and has committed fornication with all the kings of the earth. She is STATE RELIGION or institutionalized false religion that unites with the STATE and rules over secular governments.

    5. She is MYSTERY BABYLON religion and even wears the same colors of the Mystery Babylon religion preisthood.

    6. She is the institutionalized APOSTATE STATE CHURCH in competition with the institutionalized Bride (Rem. 19:6-10; 21-22:2). She is a Whore in contrast to the Bride. She is a worldly city in contrast to a heavenly city. She contains true people of God (Rev. 18:4) whereas, the Bride does not contain all true people of God (Rev. 19:8-9; 21:24-25; 22:2).

    7. She is the Roman Catholic Church today which continues in Rome as the institutionalized STATE CHURCH and incorporates all false religion within its embrace.

    >I was thinking Islam.

Until the USSR collapsed did not most of you who are old enough think "Russia?" In other words, does not politics drive this sort of analysis?

I was thinking Jerusalem. And yes, I remember when Russia was thought to fit the bill. Even heard it in my Baptist Church. There have been many opinions over the years as to just who is the 'Great Whore'.

Yeah, there was a lot of speculation that the anti-christ would come from Romania (behind the iron curtain). I cannot remember how they came up with this conclusion as I was young.

This thread has to do with the Great Whore not the identity of the Anti-Christ. This thread has to do with that city which reigned over the kingdoms of the world when John wrote not Romania? This thread has to do with false religion of Babylon or "Mystery Babylon" not secular Rome as she rides upon what symbolizes secular government and she commits fornication with the kings of the earth or secular governers.

You've spent too much time with Bottner. The truth is that its disobedient Israel. If you read the Old testiment God compares disobedient Israel with an adulturer, and as a harlet. Just read the book of Hosea.

Sorry to disappoint you but I have never read Boettner on this. Also, Jerusalem did not reign overall the kingdoms of the world when John wrote this (Rev. 17:18) but only Rome did. Sorry, your interpretation that it is disobedient Israel is completely erroneous.

You might as well have. You practically quoted him. You must be influenced by someone influenced by him.

Also note when the bible says all as in nations it doesn't always mean all but all in a particular region thus in the NT when it says the gospel was spread all over the world it was the know world ie the Roman Empire. North America hadn't been discovered yet unless you agree with the mormons.

    Yes, the apostle John!

Confession is good for the soul. Revelation 17:18 speaks of a city that ruled over the Roman Empire! Hmmmmmm! What city ruled over the Roman Empire? Could it be the city the Roman empire ruled over and destroyed (Jerusalem) or the city that actually ruled over the Roman Empire and Jerusalem and destroyed Jerusalem? Hmmmmmmmm? Tough question?

All the kingdoms of the world? Shurely shome mishtake?

Ever heard of the Parthian Kingdom? Or the various kingdoms in India? Not to mention the Han Empire in China. The Romans were certainly aware of the first two and probably aware of the last.

Can you name any other city (Rev. 17:18) that ruled over "the kings of the earth"? Wouldn't the term "king" refer to a sovereign of another nation besides the one ruling over it?

What other "city" could make such a boast when John wrote this? Where was John when he wrote this? Was he in some other kingdom? Hmmmmmm.....

    Some history lessons for you.

    1) The Romans destroyed Jerusalem and salted the ground the temple was destroyed in 70 AD.

2)The City of Rome was destroyed or sacked by several different invaders the Visigoths being but one.

3)Currently Italy whose government is in Rome is under the EU which is lead by Germany and Particularily Brussels in Belgium.

So what City rulled over the Empire? It depends what time period you are speaking about. Rome was one then Constantinople, the Milan, Then Florence. Which one is your pick?

At the time of John's writing no one had taken over Rome. At this point in history only Carthage had tried. Yet Rome knew nothing of the Aztecs or who ever lived in the america's Nor was Babylon under Roman Authority.

Sorry, but you informed me of nothing that I did not already know! Second your question is rediculous because you simply ignore the tense in Revelation 17:18 which is present tense and demands the city was at that point in time ruling over the kings of the earth. Rome was ruling in numbers 1 and 2. That repudiates your "Israel" interpretation completly.

Again, the present tense in Revelation 17:18 proves that John is speaking of Rome not Israel.

Again, the Rome John is speaking about in Revelation 17:18 is not the SECULAR Rome but the SPIRITUAL Rome or the RELIGIOUS Rome which he identifies as "Mystery Babylon".

Again, the Rome John is speaking about is not SECULAR Rome because this Rome - mystery babylon sits on the back of secular governments and has since the Old Testament. Babylonian Religion has ruled over all the governments of the earth including Israel at many times in its history.

At that time Rome had nothing to do with God. There was no spiritual rome at that time. There were many religions in the Empire Babylon was not over roman religion. In fact certain religions were not permited. So it couldn't have been rome. Remember the type of liturature revelation is; is apocalyptic which means its very symbolic like the book of 1st Enoch. Israel had grieved God many times worshiped false God's incorporated Babylonian thought into their own faith maybe even helped start Zoroastrianism. So it doesn't match up with Rome. Nor does it do so know as Rome is ruled by brussels and the rome John Knew no longer exist.

Rome did not rule Babylon. Rome did not rule Cathay. Rome did not rule India. Rome did not rule Arabia. Rome did not Rule Ethiopia. Rome did not rule Gog or Magog or Russia. Rome did not rule Afgahnistan, or Pakistan, or Uzbekistan, or any ancient city those countries grew from. So you are wrong.
