Baigent is not new. He and another fellow (Richard Leigh) were peddling this same type of stuff back in the early 90s with the "Dead Sea Scrolls Deception" or something along those lines. The work was trounced in scholarly circles. I don't think any real scholar, except perhaps Robert Eisenman, would give this much thought!

how much of an impact do you think it will make on christianity? it's getting some pretty heavy duty exposure right now.

The only negative impact it will make on christianity is for those who do not have a genuine faith. For the unsaved, it is God who gives faith to believe, book or no book.

in the end days there will be many deceivers going out to draw christians away from the faith, satan will pull out all the stops to make sure he gets his fair share. this is just one more, on a very large pile of deceptions, that are destroying christianity.

Christianity can not be destroyed, the enemy has already lost the battle. We don't know that this is the end days, or that this book will have anything to do with it.

Sure this is the end days. That book is just more evidence that Jesus is coming back any day now.

Michael Baigent's earlier books such as Holy Blood, Holy Grail were shredded in scholarly circles and all but ignored in church circles. The only reason he's getting any press at all these days is the publicity surrounding The Da Vinci Code and the related plagiarism lawsuit.

Baigent is a kook. But he's not the kookiest kook. Around the same time as Holy Blood, another book was published titled The Sacred Mushroom and the Cross, by John Q. Allegro. This hilarious work of pseudoscholarship alleges that Jesus was a hallucination brought on when a fertility cult ingested "magic mushrooms." No one remembers Allegro much either.

    This, too, shall pass.
