Have you ever heard someone say that?

For example, "The Lord told me to tell you that you should go to XYZ school to be a missionary to South America"

My first question is Why did the Lord tell you first - why didn't he just tell the individual himself?

    Thoughts?

I'm sure that I'm not quite spiritual enough to receive direct revelations from the Lord, for I have never had the Lord tell me anything.

Now,to be sure, I have been impressed to do certain things. I believe the Lord has created within me a desire to do some things--go on a mission trip, for instance. Or speak to someone about his spiritual condition.

I have talked with many preachers about their calls. God revealed his call in many different ways, but I don't recall any of them saying that God told them anything.

I have to confess that there is some skepticism that rises up within me when I hear someone say "God told me...." I think part of the reason is that I have seen it abused on so-called Christian TV. Sometimes it's called a "word of knowledge." Another time it's called a "prophecy."

A pastor of mine years ago taught homiletics at a nearby Bible college. He assigned all of his students to prepare a sermon--expository, not topical. They were to preach it to the class and receive a grade on it.

One young man was already involved in evangelism. When his turn came, he preached a topical sermon. When he went to pick up his grades, he found that the professor (my pastor) had given him an F.

The young man stormed into the professor's office. "You gave me an F? Why???"
"Because you preached a topical sermon and the assignment was expository.

"But God told me to preach that sermon," said the young student.

Said the professor, "God told me to give you an F."

    Cute!
Key wording here is taht why God talks to others. not myself about my issues...

Think that at times God CAN send someone your way to address one of your needs/provides answers/wisdom/guidance etc

BUT always will be something that God already addressed with you, you are praying about etc

    Never outside of the Bible!

For example, know people have been "blessed" witha gift of money "out of the blue" for exact amount needed that Month, had grocercies "show up" on their front door, and had someone else provided a car for a gift, as that person "felt led" by God to help other family out!

The only thing God told me to do is "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature." Thus I have heard the Word of the Lord, not by voice of man but by the Word according to Mark.

I have heard people say that (more in my youth) and it never did sit quite right with me.

Here's my problem with the subject of the opening post (and thus, why I basically agree with everyone else that has responded so far):

1 Kings 13:18 He said unto him, I [am] a prophet also as thou [art]; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the LORD, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. [But] he lied unto him.

I've seen a tendency among certain circles of IFB preachers to act like the aforementioned prophet, and tell young men in bible colleges what God would have them do. I'd rather you get it sure and certain what you believe God would have you do, and I'll support you as God leads me to.

    True story.

My late Father-in-law minister and his minister friend were both between churches. There was a small church without a pastor. They both spoke at the church on consecutive Sundays. After the service on the first Sunday, a woman told the visiting minister that the Lord just showed her that he was to be their pastor. This was passed on to the minister coming the next Sunday. After the second Sunday service, the same woman told the visiting minister that the Lord just showed her that he was to be their pastor. The second minister responded "Didn't the Lord tell you last Sunday that Rev. _____ is to be your pastor?". The woman's face turned red and she left immediately.

The only thing the Lord has ever told me is in the words of Genesis - Revelation. That's all I need!

reminds me of the lament that a famous preacher, think Chuck Swindoll, had that it seemed evry time someone attended one of their seminars it was 'the Lord told me to go" always in Summer time, never the Winter!

I have been witness to the Lord impressing upon someone to tell another someone, something that the first someone had no knowledge of. Except for the fact that he was to tell this friend a generality of some sort. This person was not one who had ever done this before and would not have done it this time, except they were truly and strongly impressed.

His fear was that he would sound foolish or nosy, yet when he relayed the vague message that was impressed upon him by the Lord. The receiver of the message broke out in a big smile and tears welled up in his eyes as he gave the giver of the message a big hug and told him. "I know this probably made no sense to you, but your unsolicited message has answered my prayer for verification of a situation in my life."

That was all that was said except that we prayed together and thanked God for His sometimes mysterious ways.

I still figure that God will tell me first if He wants something specific from me. If I don't know about it I figure that it is just something the bearer of "God told me you should _______" is really something they want from me.

I have not had anyone say that to me, but soon after my conversion, one of my Christian friends was told, "God has told me to tell you that if it is raining when you get off the bus, the first girl you meet will be your wife. If it is sunny, she won't!" It was raining when he got off the bus, but the first girl he met was about 8 years old! He didn't marry her!

People nowadays want to be the next "Modern Day Prophet", and go and tell people what good things the Lord has in store for them. Sad part of this is that a bunch of people will swallow this "hook, line, and sinker". Sometimes, they'll swallow the "rod and reel", too.

I am like the rest on here, if God wants me to do something, He will cut out the "middle man", and come directly to me.

There is no more Divine inspiration of new revelation. But there is plenty of Divine motivation to go around.

There is no question this happens and probably most of the time it is someone who is over zealous and not hearing from God. However I would not always ignore what is said. The words of a prophet is confirmed in two or three. Such things needs to be discerned with a seeking spirit and prayer.
As to why the Lord does not speak directly to the person He may have His reasons as He did in the clear teachings of the OT and NT as well as both testaments give evidence of God doing this.

No it isn't. :) (I should have put one of those smiley things after the last sentence of my previous post!)

For the curious, the legal minimum age for marriage here is 18 (16 with parental consent), though as late as 1929 it was 12 for girls and 14 for boys!

I don't think anyone here will deny that God can reveal his will to a believer. He does it in a variety of ways. I just have a problem with the phrase "God told me." It sounds as if God spoke audibly to someone.

Has this happened to any of you? An audible voice that you just knew was God speaking?

Some posters have talked about strong impressions. I have mentioned the welling up of an intense desire. I think there is something to opened/closed doors.

Please, some of you relate how God has showed you his will.

I will just relate how it almost all ways happens when the opportunity to witness occurs in my life!

That the Holy Spirit prompts/convicts me so much to start the conversation with the other person, that it "feels" that He is right there directing this, that I am compelled to start the discussion...

I am usually timid to approach others, especially starngers, but while so 'convicted" moved on/on, start to discuss with the other person, and get strenght and remembrance of His Word from God....
