I think the OP was well-written and its meaning clear and appropriate.

The reason for the well deserved perceptions of this post is because it is one sided. It only mentions the loss and nothing about the positive side of the sacrifice and what that means. Of course for some their is no positive side. It is a false notion that we will never know the true cost of a war. This country is where it is because of just such a cost. And such views are quite offensive to many others. Since you posted this in a public forum and especially on the BB you should have expected a response to such a post.

Thank You Don For your post!

Untrue. The OP is perfectly appropriate and the negative responses to it, while perhaps grounded in pain and emotion, need to be responded to.

The very purpose of Memorial day is to honour those who have fallen, not to reflect on the accomplishments that may have been achieved by war.

    From Wikipedia

Memorial Day is a United States Federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May (in 2008 on May 26). Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. men and women who perished while in military service to their country. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War, it was expanded after World War I to include casualties of any war or military action.

The argument that the OP is one-sided does not account for the specific intent of Memorial Day - to honour those who have perished, not to laud the accomplishment of various wars.

Perhaps one will argue that the sacrifices are inseperable from the accomplishments. Either way, no reasonable person would see the OP as in any sense disrespectful to the spirit of Memorial Day. The OP poster focused in on the sacrifice side. He is not obliged to given an exhaustive treatment of all dimensions of warfare.

And we are not obliged to be happy or silent about it.

But you are obliged to treat the OP poster reasonably and fairly. And while none of us know the history of "Don" and should not presume to belittle his experiences, it is still wrong to jump on the OP.

It was a clear, generous declaration of sorrow over life cut short. As such, it should not be attacked the way that it has (again, making appropriate allowances for the personal experiences of Don which may have understandably caused him to misinterpret the OP).

You are wrong, I disagree and it is not just Don.

Thank God Almighty for the brave men and women now serving and that have served to make the world a better place.

    Thanks to all Soldiers.
It is the Soldier, not the reporter, who has given us the freedom of the press.
It is the Soldier, not the poet, who has given us the freedom of speech.
It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.
It is Christ, not the priest, who has given us the freedom to approach the throne of God.
