As many of you know, I have gone on record claiming that the GOP will maintain control of both House and Senate after Tuesday's election. I have heard everyone on AirAmerica getting ecstatic about the possibility of winning back Congress, and I almost feel sorry for them, as Tuesday's results are going to be quite a blow.

That being said, I have a question for everyone:
What is going to happen in the final two years of the second Presidential term?
    I will start:

    1. There is the possibility of two Justices stepping down: Stevens and Ginsburg. I don't know for a fact that this will happen, but there certainly is a lot of speculation. I believe that we are going to get two more Justices with a track record similar to that of Justice Alito.

    2. I also believe that there is going to be a massive assault on Social Security - specifically, an overwhelming push to privatize this program.

To usurp the "Culture Warrior," what say you? Please: I would like a discussion. There are no wrong answers.

    Regards,
    BiR

Two more justices like Alito would be ... well ... who knows. He hasn't done much yet.

As for privatizing social security, it should have been done a long time ago, or at least given the option to opt out of it. Set up taxes that if a person contributes to retirement the equivalent of his SS tax, he will not have to pay SS tax. (And he will not receive from it when he retires.). Make SS one option among many of retirement plans.

I too am skeptical that the Dems will gain control of both houses. I think it is at best an even chance that they will gain one, less than that they will gain both. Which isn't all bad. The Republicans are the worst major political party out there except for the Democrats. The only thing worse than having Republicans in control is having Democrats in control.

The only good thing about having Democrats in control is that it will remind people how bad they are.

I believe a continuing Republicn majority in both houses
will mount a full scale frontal assault upon Social Security.
The same thing will happen in case there is a change of the guard
in the House &/or the Senate.

I know my Wife is on Medicare and has to personally pay
for the medicine of six other elderly people in addition to her own
medical needs (which fortunately are not real great yet).

Here 'no choice' (she is on State of Oklahoma retirement)
Medicare suppliment pays $2.50 per prescription IF THE PRESCRIPTION
is approved for Medicare & Suppliment purposes.

Whoever is elected by my district for the House will be hearing from me
    about this :(

Regardless of who is in the majority :

    1. You may be right about the two justices, but it is unlikely two such hardcore liberal judges would willingly retire while Bush is in office. They would , I believe, have to die to make it possible.

    2. I believe your fears about an "assault" on social security are unfounded. The empty "trust fund" will remain empty.

Thanks for the great responses, but what do YOU think is going to happen?

Although I do not like it and will vote for our republican represenative, I believe the democrats will capture the house and republicans retain the senate. That is a very good senerio about the justices. Social Security I think will stay unchanged. My main concern for the next two years is Iran, North Korea, and who the two major parties put up for President in two years. Both sides are very fluid.

There is a rumor floating around Washington circles that one of the justices on the left is having health problems. It is speculated to be John Paul Stevens.

Since the bible clearly states that evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived (2 Tim 3:13), and since the bible warns those and of those that will call good evil and evil good. I don't think there is any doubt in my mind that it will not be long before...........

I think that if Social Security is going to be dramically changed it should start immediately not 10 or 20 years from now. If we're going to start breaking promises to retirees it should start with current retirees (cut benefits to the Great Generation). Then real people will feel real pail and the changes can be reconsidered.
