Well, I have read just about every review and even reviews of the reviews!!!! Some say that with the Passion that evangelicals such as I should rush out and use it as a tool to witness.

There's a seemingly "storm" out there where believers are being "tossed about with every wind of doctrine"

So if you ask me what I'm gonna do about the Passion---I would have to say as Captain of the ship(pastor of my church)-----"Steady as she goes, Boys! Steady as she goes! The storm will pass by and by! Steady as she goes!"

The Passion film will sink with the Titanic and Germany's Battleship Bismarck(Passion just has a slower leak and will soon join the rest of the best of what Hollywood can produce about the Lord Jesus)---while true doctrine coming from the Absolute Truth of Scripture will still be cutting the course to safe harbor in Jesus!

So if you say, "Look over yonder, Blackbird! Lets sail over there and join Passion!" My reply would be, "Hold your course, Helmsman! Steady as she goes!"

What I meant was this: First, while 99.9 % of what Hollywood gives us is sinful, rotten trash, this does not mean the other 1% is automatically corrupt. Second, while I disagree with the Catholic church and disagree with Mel Gibson's views on salvation, I do not automatically throw out everything done by a Catholic, just as I do not accept everything done by a Baptist. I came across a book the other day by a Baptist author that supported very obvious unbiblical doctrines. However, I do not go with the "guilt by association" route. Therefore, it is my opinion that one can glean good things from this film, because I have seen it, felt it to be biblical, and felt a compulsion to use it as a motivation for me to share what Jesus did with others. But that is my opinion and is not necessarily any more right than any one else's.

I understand where you are coming from, and see the point you are trying to make. I do hope that you aren't associating the film with this horrible act of terrorism on our country.

You are absolutely correct in your stance on the Word of God. The film is just that... a film. But it can be a powerful witnessing tool. However, let's stand on God's Word!

    uhdum,

You are very kind and act in a very humble, Godly way when debating. for that you are to be commended.

I don't agree with every generalization that Joey Faust makes on his site. In fact we disagree on many issues of "personal holiness" Generalizations can be dangerous (Stereotyping, Racism, etc.) However they can also save us from many dangers. For example, not all snakes are dangerous but I am not going to let a baby "exercise her discernment". I'll just keep her away from all snakes. If a road has 99.9% of it's surface mined, then a "good generalization" is to not travel that road in spite of the .01% of passable road. In my oponion as a pastor, I have to warn people that the road is "guilty by association".

I usd to run "Gleaners" (combines) all throughout the mid-western states on the wheat harvest. If a field was 99.9% weeds and .01% wheat, it just wouldn't pay the farmer for me to cut it. I suspect that when you look back at Godly pastors and writers of yesterday, you will find many more such generalizations.

My main point still stands that it seems OK to make "generalizations" about anyone who is thought to be "legalistic" but the "legalistic" ones are evil for doing the same thing.

I know what "legalistic" means. I'm just waiting for someone to admit that warning folks about Hollywood, The Roman church, violence, blood gore, nudity, etc. is not legalism.

Well, I'll add this in response to Lacy's anticipationatory comments: Christ rebuked the Pharisee for his "mote removal" service without first taking care of his own "beam." The direct commandment succeeding that parable is to 1) remove beam, followed by 2) remove mote (de frateris).

Those dubbed Legalists are true legalists if 1) They demand works for salvation (the textbook definition) or 2) They demand works that they themselves will not or cannot bear.

    Well, I will concede that...
    a) the film is just a film... it is not scripture and we must be wary of any resource, no matter how compelling, being lifted up on the pedestal of scripture

    b) there are some distinctly Roman Catholic doctrines reflected in the film, against which we must stand firmly and clearly with biblical teaching

    c) we must not get swept up in the trends and passions of our culture, for the sake of enjoying our culture's trends and passions

However, none of these things are IMHO reasons for dismissing the film out of hand. Those who are grounded in faith or are being guided by goo teachers will get unspeakable value out of coming face-to-face with the breadth and depth of Christ's very real sacrifice.

And the reality is not clean and sanitized as we imagine it... God's blood sacrifices for our sin before Christ were bloody and messy and very real...so is the suffering and shed blood of Christ.

I agree with the principle of not seeing R rated movies. We need not partake of any profanity, sexuality, or other ungodly things - not even glorificaiton of ungodly lifestyles or world-views. These things are harmful.

But whose vaues do we choose? The ratings boards, whom we do not trust and do not share our values, or those of scripture, which revels in the truth and in honoring God...

I see the core of this film is the honest and faithful protrayal of the real sacrifice of Christ. The side dishes, so to speak, are just that, and for the most part are interesting conversation pieces for the distinctives of our scriptural faith versus the non-scriptural traditional beliefs of the Roman Catholic persuasion.

And no, it is not legalism to avoid media in the name of discernment - there we may disagree.
But I also say that to dismiss the film out of hand because of the labels applied to it or because it is a movie or because of Mr. Gibson's Catholic views may (read: may) be akin to demanding that one cannot eat the meat because it was sacrificed to an idol.

    In Christ,
    Dave

    Pluvivs,

    Very Biblical definition. Thank you.

Now if we could set aside our "passions" and think about all this rationally. Is it a reasonable generalization that if Hollywood puts a rating of R on a movie that a Christian should be VERY careful?

Methinks that "it's only because of the graphic violence" argument is as about as honorable as the "it's only because of the graphic sex" argument in the theoretical movie "The Passion of Adam and Eve".

Honestly what is the difference between taking our wives and kids to see graphic, violent, rated-R,gore and taking them to see graphic, violent, rated-R, sex. Why not have an "honest and faithful portrayal" of Song of Solomon or Adam and Eve? How about the book of Judges? Just imagine Jael driving the nail through Sisera's head in slow motion, "saving" Israel! Or Sampson getting his eyes put out on the bigscreen in technicolor and digital dolby, for 10 minutes!

    Prayerfully consider it, Lacy

BrianT, I do apologize for the marks around the word christian...I had no malice in mind when putting them there...guess it's a bad habit of mine.

LadyE~it was NOT directed towards you or anyone for that matter...just a stupid, careless tho't. I've never considered "catfighting" with anyone. If I've ever been guilty of it, I was not aware of it.

BroLacy~when I made the remark to take the blame, I really tho't someone else besides me mistook you for a girl, & you were the one in trouble. Sorry.

And I was trying to make a "funny", cuz the "marks" reminded me of teef, not nails. :D I apologize for causing a mess to the thread.

This Passion of Adam & Eve parody is no joke.

We must brace ourselves and batten down the hatches and prepare our theological rhetoric for the coming storm...

...of tasteless, irreverent, inaccurate, weirdly influenced, perhaps flat out demonic, films that are going to be spawned by The Passion.

The Passion of David and Bathsheba.

The Passion of Solomon and his Concubines.

The Passion of The Samaritan Woman at the Well and Her Past 5 Husbands, plus a Current Live-in Boyfriend.

The Passion of Job, Noah, ye get me drift, folks.

    Thanks a lot, Mel.

"Judas" is about to be inflicted on us by ABC on March 8 (Monday night). Let's see how many evangelicals rally behind this one.

Try to get a copy of THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO ST. MATTHEW by Pier Paolo Pasolini, 1964, Italian with English subtitles...

...to see a really decent, biblically accurate (nearly word-for-word rendition) and truly reverent film about Jesus...

...by (get ready to freek out) an Atheist Communist Italian avant-garde filmmaker! Yet you can tell, he really admired and loved Jesus. Amazing, brothers and sisters.

I'm very afraid that the "passion" exhibited on these boards (not an attack on you Dave) may prove that, for some believers, the movies and entertainment in general ARE the idols.

No doubt they are [idols] elsewhere in the world, Lacy. And truly many countless Christians ("quotation-marked" and otherwise) have drunk that spirit throughout this century.

Would any here in this forum disagree with the statement "repentance and salvation comes through the reading and preaching of God's Word, and not through other media?"

Yes, I would disagree. Because of the phrase "and not through other media". God can use His Word through media other than reading directly from a page of the Bible or directly in a sermon.
I recall the testimony of Chris Temple, a beloved member of this board who is now with the Lord. (He was a Calvinist par excellence.)He repented and believed after seeing a church billboard with a Biblical message.

Ludicrous. Repentance and salvation are gifts of God and I'm not about to put Him in a box.

How many have been saved watching TV? I'd wager tens of thousands.

Wherever the Gospel message is proclaimed folks can repent and believe. ALL media can be used to "preach" the Gospel.

Preach = kerux or herald or proclaim. This is NOT limited to formal Sunday sermon behind a pulpit. It can be "proclaimed" in a film, song or over the fence while hanging out the laundry.
