I think you talk to them. I have had to do that on several occasions with teh same person. The last time I brought it up, I was asked, "What message do you think it sends when I am late?" I said "It sends the message that it is not important."

I have learned the hard way that problems don't go away. Talk to people about their problems. It is a part of leadership and discipleship. IT is a hard conversation to have, but that is why you get the big bucks ... or something like that ...

Excellent point. That would bring up another one of my pet peeves. Preachers who say more than is needed. I can sit under a good teacher or preacher for hours, but hate a 45 minute sermon that could have been said in 30. I heard a guy once who illustrated his illustrations. It was something else.

Well said - we must be prayed up, studied up, and prepared to give the message that God has laid on our hearts.

Most preaching IS pretty boring. Or pretty numbing. It is not much proclamation of truth and more opinions and preferences of the "man of God" behind the pulpit.

I taught homiletics in an ifb college and tried to communicate to the students (those who stayed awake in class) the need for communicating the Word effectively. I pray they listened . .

I don't see how anyone can fall asleep if there is fire and passion in the pulpit.

I have heard some very quiet sepakers have so much to say that there was no noise in the congregation. John Stott isone of those. I find his style to be kind of boring but I could listen to him for hours because he ahs something to say.

I recall a student once complaining that a man fell asleep whilst he was preaching. "What to do?" he asked the homiletics professor. "You put him to sleep, dear man. You wake him up!"

So often that is very true. We might best listen to Martin Luther, who said, "Stand up! Speak up! And shut up!"

Many preach long sermons because they have not sufficiently studied and prepared. It takes far more time to prepare a 20 minute sermon, with essence, than it does to speak for 30-45 minutes, with nothing of essence.

    Cheers,

    Jim

It takes me 20 minutes to "taxi" to the runway, Jim!! The difference between the model "Twenty Minute" sermon and my 40 minute sermon????

Let's just compare it between a Piper Cub and an F-18 Hornet!!!

If I had to take more than 30 minutes at best, I would give up the pulpit, or give up talking altogether. Why should a sermon take longer to deliver than a steak dinner takes to consume?

    Cheers,

    Jim

Believe me, Jim! If I HAD a 20 minute sermon---I'd preach it!! The thing about it is---I don't HAVE a 20 minute sermon!!! :D :D

Ever pastor a bunch of dairy farmers who have been up milking/chores since 4:30 am in -30F Wisconsin winter, and then shower (hopefully) and come into the nice warm church building?

Trust me, they may stay awake but they WILL be fighting sleep . . . and usually losing the war!

...or some of the older folks are on pain meds for many diverse troubles. (At least that's what I tell myself!)

A lot of younger people tend to have short attention spans these days... Blame it on television.
