Seems to me the Reformation contained the seeds of the USA. But what do I know? I'm pretty unschooled in such things. So, I ask, does anyone here have a similar suspicion? Have books or articles been written about this link?

And, have Americans forgotten such a connection?

Considering that the most prominent Founding Fathers were nonchristians I'd say no. If anything, it can be said that the USA was born out of the Age of Enlightenment, which was tolerant of religious freedoms, sparked by the issue of Taxation without Representation.

What validates this theory of yours? I mean do you have any specific information? Because I don't follow your reasoning at all.

    Thanks!

While some of the first travelers from Europe were Christian and left because of persecution, most came because they to find a new economic opportunity.

I don't think you can make a strong link between the Protestant Reformation and the founding of America. Probably more of a post hoc ergo propter hoc thing than a direct result. :)

They were there yes, and the non-reformed as well.
There was about 6 of one and a half dozen of the other.

You are correct. I have noted this as I have read many histories and biographies in the past. Recently this was discussed in a biography of Ben Franklin that I read. Will Durant discusses this at length in The Age of Voltaire. I believe that is the correct volume in his epic "History of Civilization."

    Nevada, welcome to BB.
Since you are not a Baptist please post in those forums which are designated for those that are non-Baptist. For that reason, I have moved this thread into the history forum where I thought it would be the most appropriate. If it isn't the moderator of this forum may move it elsewhere.
