In another thread a poster is being quite adamant that a church is NOT Southern Baptist!!! because it also belongs to another church group.

The church in question contributes financially to the SBC, and can be found on the SBC website directory. Its pastor is also listed on the Southern Baptist ministers directory. One of its members served this year on the Tellers Committee at the SBC annual meeting.

Do the church's ties to the 'Sovereign Grace' group of churches disqualify the church from being Southern Baptist?

Well, looking at section 15 C. of the SBC bylaws a committee member has to have been a member of an SBC church for the last three years.

They are in fact an SBC church. Many churches in the convention are dually aligned and there has been no evidence to the contrary to suggest otherwise.

So, you are suggesting a church must be a member for three years to become a member?

Membership occurs at the Associational level. Usually the church goes under what is called a Watchcare status where they must participate and contribute for one year before obtaining voting privileges.

For everyone's information the church and Pastor in Question is CJ Mahaney and his church Sovereign Grace in Louisville.

    From their website:
There connection to SBC is stated as being partners.

    http://sgclouisville.org/about

They are also listed on the Sovereign Grace Ministries website as one of their churches.

    http://www.sovereigngrace.com/our-churches

To the OP why is it so important to you to try to connect CJ with SBC?

No. I wasn't saying anything about length of a church's membership. Only the requirement for board or committee members.

I was trying to quote the bylaw, but I was on my phone and messed up. It was 15 H., not 15 C.

    • Any person elected to serve on any of the boards, institutions, commissions, or the Executive Committee, shall at the time of such election have been continuously a resident member for at least the preceding three (3) years of a church or churches which were in those years in friendly cooperation with the Convention and sympathetic with its purposes and work, and, where representation is by qualifying states, which were either geographically within the state or affiliated with the convention of the state from which the person is elected. Any person who is a member of one of these entities shall be considered as having resigned when the person ceases to be a resident member of a church either geographically within the state or affiliated with the convention of the state from which he/she has been elected as a representative.
But looking closer on the laptop, it doesn't look like the Tellers are held to that standard. But a Teller must still meet the requirements of being a Messenger, and so be from an SBC associated church.

Each person elected by a church cooperating with the Southern Baptist Convention as a messenger to the Southern Baptist Convention shall be registered as a messenger to the Convention upon presentation of proper credentials.

At least this topic has made me look through the bylaws, I guess.

Is partnership a common way of expressing a Southern Baptist church's relationship to the Convention?

The naysayer appears to be fixated on the church's website using the term partnering as evidence that the church isn't Southern Baptist. Weird.

Again many churches in the SBC are dually aligned. You do not get placed in the minister search of the SBC website unless you are correctly aligned with the SBC.

It is a common way of expressing that.

If that is the case I stand corrected. All I knew was that CJ Mahaney was part of Sovereign Grace, and that fact had been completly omitted when he was first brought up in another thread. I was just trying to be helpful and factual about his affiliations.

To the OP why is it so important to you to connect CJ with SBC?

You can use my screen name you know. I'm not afraid to be corrected although I do think it is telling that you made no mention of his affiliation with Sovereign Grace when you brought him up in the other thread. Why was that? And why the determation to connect him to the SBC?

This is clearly a Southern Baptist church.

I just don't understand the controversy...nor do I care to.
