This past weekend I thought I had been taken back 30 years in a time warp, I was 10 years old and watching Tom Watson contend for the British Open. What an incredible story. It got me to thinking: What are the greatest athletic feats done by people over the age of 50? Watson would have to rank pretty high on that list.

Sad to see that one nine-iron shot was hit so perfectly, that it likely traveled 8-10 yds. beyond where one might have thought, on 18, took a hard bounce, and rolled all the way up against the collar of the rough, thus likely costing him the championship.

As to some other 'ageless wonders', how about Satchel Paige in baseball, and Gordie Howe in hockey, plus the 81 year old NASCAR driver who qualified for a West Coast race, just this weekend?

I have never liked Tom Watson. Never liked him as a person and have read stories about his character that make him seem to be less than a gentleman. Also, as a Jack Nicklaus fan, how could I like a guy for what he did to my guy at Pebble in the '82 US Open?

That said, how could you not help but root for him? Hated to see him lose that way, and hated it for a genuinely good guy named Stewart Cink. A good golfer and even better man, his first major (won't be his last) will never be remembered as the one he won (it should...if you don't believe me, look at the 72nd hole) but the won Tom Watson lost.

Over fifty? Tough. Now, over 40? One that comes to mind is Pete going 5-5 during his final season (45, wasn't he?)

Mark Martin has won 4 Nascar races just this season.

In September 1991, Harry Gant, at the age of 51, won 4 Nascar Cup races in a row.
