Top 5 Versions You Use.

Thank you for this great thread! When I use an English translation for casual reading or devotions, I use primarily the NASB. When communicating with those who strongly favor the KJV, I generally use the KJV in either the 1769 or 1850 editions because those are the editions that I have on my computer. For alternative translations I use mostly the NIV, the RSV, and the ESV. Therefore:

1. NASB, 1995
2. KJV, 1769; 1850
3. NIV
4. RSV
5. ESV

 

HCSB

 

I wan;t done posting above hit the wrong key .HcSB,ESV,NIV,NASB and NLT.These are the ones I seem to use the most in the last few months .Aso like the NKJ .

That is the order I consult them in for studying. The Greek/Hebrew always comes first for me (or at least a very close second depending on the passage ... I usually translate it first).

 

I use the NASB in my devotions. I have to use my KJV for memorizing scripture for Bible Quiz, so I read from that frequently. I read from the ESV and the RSV when I have a problem undestanding a verse. But, truethfully those are the only ones in my house so there you go!

I do not have
a NASV95 so cannot compare it.
I don't have an ASV that I know of ,
so i can't compare it to anything.

I have only
a couple of NIVs which i've not yet
had time to compare even with each other.

It is kind of hard to meaninglyfully
discuss documents one does not have.

I am sure they could attack your versions too, for the same reasons the attack other translations of God's word. After all, God has purified and distilled his Word into English, get on the bandwagon!

BTW do you know the history of the versions you use, what would be the underlying texts they were translated from in general. Are they literal, or more dynamic. Just wondering, since I am only familiar with the history of English translations.

Mines really short:
The KJV, the only Bible for the English speaking people, Gods inspired, preserved, infallible, inerrent, Word of God.
Unlike others on here I dont rely on "divine inspiration" to select which versions (plural) im going to use. I just picked the Bible God blessed and if your interested in this sort of thing the Bible with the best scholars on it.

No kidding ... Nothing divine about your decisoin making. It is based solely on teh wisdom of man. You have substituted the teaching of man for the teaching of God, something Christ condemned the Pharisees for.

1 NBG-vertaling of 1951
The official Protestant translation of the Netherlands (NBG stands for Nederlands Bijbel Genootschap = Dutch Bible Society). It is an update of the Statenbijbel in the same sense that the Revised Standard Version is sometimes described as an update of the KJV. A very good studybible, but a bit dry from a literary point of view. It lies halfway between a dynamic and a literal translation.
This translation was based both on what was considered state of the art in textual criticism at the time and on the text underlying the Statenbijbel.

2 Willibrord vertaling (1995 update)
The Bibletranslation created by the KBS (Katholieke Bijbel Stichting = Catholic Bible Foundation).
Officially it's the translation made by and for the Dutch Roman Catholic Church. In practice it is used in Evangelical circles as well.
A moderately dynamic translation that get's updated on a regular basis, it has the advantage of being the most readable of the serious translations available in the Netherlands. It also has a literary flair sorely lacking in the NBG-vertaling. One very nice touch is the strict avoidance of distinctly Roman Catholic bits by the translation team.

3 Statenbijbel GBS edition
The Dutch AV of 1637. Translated from the same Greek/Hebrew texts as the KJV. Using the Elsevier edition of the Textus Receptus instead of the one used by the English AV translators.
It is less an update of earlier translations than the KJV and the language in it's OT is even closer to the Hebrew than that of the KJV.
I read it in the very slightly updated version of the Gereformeerde Bijbelstichting. That one modernizes some words that were normal in the 17th century, but are considered humorous or crude today.

4 Bible de Jerusalem
This is simply the rather famous French translation by the L'ecole Biblique de Jerusalem. The same guys responsible for much of the research on the Dead Sea Scrolls. I use the 1973 update.

5 Canisius Bijbel
The first Dutch Roman Catholic Bibleversion that wasn't a translation of the Vulgate. I included it purely for vanity reasons because I wrote a thesis on this translation created in the 20's (1926 NT) and 30's (1937-39 OT).

 

KJV, because first, it is the Bible I prefer. I feel it is the one that God has put His stamp of approval on.

And second, because it is the only Bible used at the IFB church where God has placed me.

And I believe that He preserved it in the KJV. I believe this because it is clear to me that God is not behind the other versions as they only foster confusion and futhurmore some of them hve foul language in them.
