Why did you list Darby at the # 1 spot? Do you think it is that good? The manuscripts it rests upon are much better than the TR,but the English is still too stilted and old-fashioned. (I even say this as a former member of the Plymouth Brethren.)

I'm glad you like the MLB and Norlie. The NET is rather low,at #8.

    What's the TBD?

There are no more good translations? Did you mean that you couldn't thiink of any others? How about the NET Bible,or the MLB? Have you ever seen the Norlie or the Weymouth? There are other options.

Darby doesn't get discussed much, does it? It is very literal (even more accurate than the KJV where I have tested it); and the underlying Greek is not slavish to the TR or later Greek texts (very eclectic). True, the English is older; but that's OK because I am accustomed to the KJV and comfortable with older English. I won't simply chase after the newer versions because they offer updated English.
Of my list, the NET is only one I have yet to read straight through; I carry it to church alot and refer to it often (like a commentary). It is quite good, and it could be higher. If there were a scale of degree, then Darby-MLB-Norlie would be very close and there would be a wide gap after the NET.

TBD= To Be Determined (similar to TBA).

    Not a Bad Number

Well, "7" is not a bad number when we're talking about the Bible, is it? ;)

I only have a pocket-sized New Testament Darby tranlation with minimal notes. It was my mom's --so I got it when she passed away.Tell me about your copy. BTW,are you from a Plymouth Brethren background like I was?

Not of Brethren background. My Darby is a complete OT & NT with a cheap vinyl cover, very small print, and no notes.

Sometimes what is readily available is merely pedestrian.

If the KJV is your favorite, then why are the NKJV and Geneva at number 8 and 9 respectively?

We've got to get you to like the MLB more. Isn't it charming? What's it doing at #10?

After studying the KJV and ASV 1901 from the time I was very young, I know them better and have memorized many verses in both, I'm more comfortable with them. Started studing the Darby in my 20's and now I'm almost as comfortable with it as the other two.

My pastor preaches out of the NKJV and so often I hear it as the KJV reads. To tell the truth I've only read it through two times, I guess I'm like A.W. Tozer was, can't wait for the next new translation but after reading it I go back to the old one. But the NET has caught a lot of my time, I do enjoy it and find my self reading it more and more.

    Great topic!

I did not see where the English Standard Version (ESV) was listed, and since in my opinion it is vastly superior to the NRSV - it fixed all the problems with at translation - it should be on list.

My list in order of my preference, but each has passages superior to all others:

1995 NASB - this is the one I study and rely on for grammar.
NIV - I do not read very well, so this is the one I read as I try to "abide" in His Word.
HCSB - this one provides an excellent cross-check, if it agrees with the NASB I feel confident the rendering is sound.
ESV - Provides a different take based on different presumptions as to what is being said.
YLT - After arriving at the big idea from the more friendly versions, this one helps to understand how the translaters arrived at their more readable versions.
NKJV - vastly improved over the KJV as far as bringing the language up to date, but still based on a different Greek text mix than most other modern versions.
KJV - I still find this one provides the very best translation of some difficult passages.
NET - this one provides the apparatus, so you can see the thinking of the translators.
NLT - yet another take on what the translators think the passage is saying.
Darby (NT) - great example of one mans view of the text, as opposed to translation by committee.
