Rev 3:20, NIV 1984. 'I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.'

Rev 3:20, NIV 2011. 'I will come in and eat with that person and they with me.'

Aaargh! Murder in the first degree of the English language! :tear: I could never bring myself to read that aloud.

The singular "they" is very common these days. And,...it got its start in merry ole' England centuries ago!

How about the NRSV?

"...I will come in to you and eat with you,and you with me."

 

I have never seen it in my life before the coming of politically correct Bibles.

Wonderful! It's just not what the Bible says, but who cares about that compared with the theological imperative of not offending feminists?

You have never seen a singular "they" in a sentence? I am rather sure you have even used the construction yourself in conversation.

How about these common ones;

If anyone is thirsty they should come over here.

Everyone likes popcorn,don't they?

Shakespear,and Chaucer before him and Jane Austin and many other established Brits have used the singular they,their construction.

You're fighting a losing cause.It's very common these days. and there's no grand conspiracy afoot.

You object to the NRSV rendering of Revelation 3:20. But the meaning of the verse is not compromised in the least.

And when you say:"It's just not what the Bible says" you are not speaking of the originals,but your preferred choice of a particular English translation.

No. I am speaking of the Greek original. Autos means 'He'

All I will say, to cover my embarrassment, is that what goes on my non-inspired blog is one thing; what goes as the inspired word of God is another.

New King James Version.

I also have a King James Version and a New International Version.

That New King James is in my hand 99% of the time.

I also want to get an English Standard Version and a 1599 Geneva.

 

It's hard to separate the two. The translation is good, and the notes are a great source of textual information.
