Hey Calvinists! Are these hymns in your hymnal? Better rip the pages out.

I Have Decided to Follow Jesus
    I am Resolved
Let Jesus Come Into Your Heart
    Whosoever, Meaneth Me
If You Will Only Let God Guide You
    I Surrender All
I Know Whom I Have Believed
I Waited for the Lord My God
    I’ve Found a Friend
Lord Jesus, I Long to be Perfectly Whole
There is a Name I Love to Hear
    Whosoever Heareth
Would You be Free From the Burden of Sin?
Spirit of God, Descend on My Heart
    Come Holy Spirit, Heavenly Dove
    We Are Climbing Jacob’s Ladder
    Saved, Saved!
Pass Me Not, Oh Gentle Savior
    Whosoever Will
    I’ll Live For Him
    Room at the Cross
Come Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy
    Come Ye Disconsolate
Just When I Need Him Most
Where Can We Find Thee, Lord?
    Free to be Me
    My Heart Looks in Faith
My Faith Looks up to Thee
My Hope is Built on Nothing Less

Thanks for providing the great list. Most of them are many of my favorites.

Or they will alter beloved hymn texts to force them to fit with their theories.

    Some examples:

    Hark! the Herald Angels Sing

    original:

"Hail the Heaven-born Prince of Peace !
Hail the Sun of Righteousness !
Light and Life to All he brings,
Ris'n with Healing in his Wings."

as censored in the Calvinist Methodist hymnbook

"Hail the Heav'n-born Prince of Peace !
Hail the Sun of Righteousness !
Light and Life AROUND he brings,
Ris'n with healing in his Wings."

    To God Be the Glory

    original:

    "To God be the glory, great things He has done;
So loved He the world that He gave us His Son,
Who yielded His life an atonement for sin,
And opened the life gate that all may go in."

as censored in the Trinity Hymnal (Presbyterian):

"To God be the glory, great things he hath done!
So loved he the world that he gave us his Son,
Who yielded his life an atonement for sin,
And opened the life gate that WE may go in."

The editors of the Baptist Hymnal (1991) changed a word in "To God Be the Glory."

In the last stanza what was "our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see" has been changed to "our wonder, our victory...."

If the editors can do it, so can I.

By the way, I counted 29 hymns in the OP. I'm comfortable with singing two-thirds of them. The others I never heard of. If there's a word I don't like, I'll change it.

Incidentally, I get a kick out of our folks at church singing the hymn "He Lifted Me" by Charles H. Gabriel. Most are non-Cals, but they heartily sing the second verse:

He called me long before I heard,
Before my sinful heart was stirred,
But when I took Him at His word,
    Forgiv’n, He lifted me.

And then there's Daniel Whittle's lyrics to "I Know Whom I Have Believed." Our folks love it. And I love it when they sing:

I know not how this saving faith
    To me He did impart,
Nor how believing in His Word
    Wrought peace within my heart.

    Refrain
I know not how the Spirit moves,
    Convincing us of sin,
    Revealing Jesus through the Word,
    Creating faith in Him.

    My response in bold:

I Have Decided to Follow Jesus – Calvinists have decided to follow Jesus
I am Resolved – Calvinists are resolved
Let Jesus Come Into Your Heart – Poor, helpless Jesus, feel sorry for him and let him do something
Whosoever, Meaneth Me – I know that whosoever means me when I am awakened from spiritual death into newness of life in Christ – Effectual Calling
If You Will Only Let God Guide You – Never heard of this, sounds thoroughly Palegian
I Surrender All – Calvinists believe in surrendering all to Jesus
I Know Whom I Have Believed – A GREAT CALVINIST HYMN!
I Waited for the Lord My God – Never heard of it, but if you can be saved by your own natural faith, why are you waiting on the Lord?
    I’ve Found a Friend - A GREAT CALVINIST HYMN!
Lord Jesus, I Long to be Perfectly Whole – Calvinists long to be perfectly whole
There is a Name I Love to Hear – Calvinists love the hear the name of Jesus
Whosoever Heareth – Never heard of it, but "let him that hath ears to hear (those irresistably regenerated by the Spirit of God), hear what the Spirit says"
Would You be Free From the Burden of Sin? – There’s power IN THE BLOOD, not in one’s own abilities – Total Depravity
Spirit of God, Descend on My Heart – Never heard of it, but it the title sounds like a description of the Grace of God enabling a poor sinner to believe and obey
Come Holy Spirit, Heavenly Dove – Same as above
We Are Climbing Jacob’s Ladder – Jesus is the only way to heaven, which Calvinists believe – Sola Christos
Saved, Saved! – Calvinists life now is sweet and their joy is complete for their SAVED, SAVED! I love to tell how HE lifted me, and what His Grace can do for you!
Pass Me Not, Oh Gentle Savior – do not pass me by! Why would God pass anyone by? Speaks to the Calvinist doctrine of preterition or reprobation.
Whosoever Will – And who will? Calvinism gives us the answer. “My sheep hear my voice”.
I’ll Live For Him – Calvinists live for Him.
Room at the Cross – there’s always room for God’s elect. “In my Father’s house ARE many dwelling places.”
Come Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy – Poor and Needy Calvinist sinners come to Christ
Come Ye Disconsolate – Disconsolate Calvinists come to Christ
Just When I Need Him Most – Calvinists need Christ
Where Can We Find Thee, Lord? – “There are none that seek after God”, but; Christ came “to seek and to save that which was lost”. Christ is the seeker, not man.
Free to be Me – Never heard of it. Is it a hymn or the humanist manifesto?
My Heart Looks in Faith – Never heard of it but a heart must be circumcised with the circumcision made without hands before it can ever “look in faith” to Christ.
My Faith Looks up to Thee – Calvinist faith looks up to Christ
My Hope is Built on Nothing Less – than Jesus blood and righteousness! Calvin says, Amen! Hallelujah!

I have sung the following in reformed churches:

My Hope is Built on Nothing Less
My Faith Looks up to Thee
Come Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy
I Know Whom I Have Believed
If Thou Wilt Suffer God to Guide Thee

Most of these hymns are not "traditional" hymns, though, and most Calvinists wouldn't sing them for that reason.

This shows you do not even begin to understand God's total sovereignty and His great love to give man freewill. That is why God is more sovereign than any follower of Calvin will ever understand.

I should think almost half of these were written by Calvinists. You'd better cut them out of your hymnal!

Silly thread. Silly premise. Meant obviously as humor.

    Not worthy of comment.

It was posted with a humorous intent, but there is some validity to it. I got the idea for posting the list after singing "I Am Resolved" two weeks ago.

I am resolved to enter the kingdom
    Leaving the paths of sin;
Friends may oppose me, foes may beset me,
    Still will I enter in.

As I was singing the refrain (above) I thought about BB and the Calvinist debates and figured this is one song a Calvinist would never sing! That prompted me to go through the Baptist Hymnal and find others.

There ARE some really horrific songs (theologically) that are in most of our hymnals, for real.

Not just the unitarian/universalist Christmas carols. Why not start a thread on the really bad hymns and not aimed at either sovereign or pelagian types.

I'd chime in, fer shur!!

    speaking of that:

    Unitarian Universalist Christmas carol

    Gods rest ye, Unitarians, let nothing you dismay;
    Remember there's no evidence there was a Christmas Day;
When Christ was born is just not known, no matter what they say,
O, Tidings of reason and fact, reason and fact,
Glad tidings of reason and fact.

Our current Christmas Customs come from Persia and from Greece,
From solstice celebrations of the ancient Middle East.
This whole darn Christmas spiel is just another pagan feast,
O, Tidings of reason and fact, reason and fact,
Glad tidings of reason and fact.

    There was no star of Bethlehem, there was no angels' song;
There could not have been wise men for the trip would take too long.
The stories in the Bible are historically wrong,
O, Tidings of reason and fact, reason and fact,
Glad tidings of reason and fact!
