Well, GH, if you know anything about ancient history, you would know that ancient Babylon is just a few miles from Baghdad. And yes, Babylon is present day Iraq. Good old Iraq. Birthplace of civilization and also the tower of Babel. Rumored to be where the Garden of Eden was. In fact, they have a tree there the locals say was the "original" tree (though that is doubtful). But, yep, that's the place. The old homestead of King Nebuchadnezzar. The great conqueror king who ended up eating grass. Where the prophet Daniel was in captivity and refused to bow down to the image. That old city of Ninevah where Jonah ended up going to preach. Yep, the old Ur and Chaldeans stomping ground. Yep, that's it. You got it. :D

The destruction of modern Babylon as prophesied in the Bible cannot be Babylon, Iraq. It is not the center of world commerce (Rev. 18:11-13; 17-19) that has merchants as the great men of the world (v. 23; Rockefeller). It is not a major seaport (Rev. 18:15-19; Jer. 51:42) and is not by many waters (Jer. 51:13,36,42). It is not the financial center of the world (Hab. 2:2-10). It does not have a large population of Christians (Rev. 18:20,24; Hab. 2:4) or Jews (Jer. 50:8,28; 51:33: Rev. 18:4) or many ethnic groups (Isa. 13:14; Jer. 50:16,37).

I'm having a lot of problem with this one. So, other countries are going to fire missiles at us and take us over? Who might this be? How could they win with our nuclear platforms on submarines each carrying 10 MIRVed warheads on 10 missiles (or more).

So, who are the great nations from the north country? Canada? :D

Can't be China, they are too far south. Could be Russia, but we would whip them so bad it wouldn't be a 2 hour war. (Although both sides would have thousands upon thousands of deaths.)

Here is another problem. The US uses very accurate missiles (within a few hundred yards, except cruise missiles, which can fly through your bedroom window). The missiles of Russia are not accurate, therefore they use extra large nukes. In fact, Russia has tested the largest nuclear bombs in the world, before testing was banned.

The inaccuracy of the missile requires a much larger warhead to make sure it destroys the target.

This does not sound much like "an expert warrior" to me. Your Babylon would be the one with the expert warriors and tactical nukes.

So, who is Israel in verse 17?

    Who is Assyria?

Why is Nebuchadnezzar mentioned in verse 17?

Who is Judah in verse 20?

Do we take some literally and some not? What would your criteria be to which is which?

I hear you! Frustrating isn't it. It is amazing how people will try to fit anything they can into the Biblical prophecy.

Sure America has turned away form God to sin and no doubt God will judge America for that, but where would you draw the line between a sentence meaning something else and one actually meaning Israel.

We may think the end is near. Paul did. We may be here several thousand more years. Some country may have a big revival and then become a world power. After all, countries do not usually last as long as America has (especially free). Then somebody will be saying it is that country.

Don't people realize that Israel is still the center of world attention and now with Iraq under foreign control, then its position now changes too.

Sorry, Prophecynut. . . can't buy your theory.

I think that Babylon is Babylon but there is a principal in scripture that might make both theories true. (Babylon is literal Babylon, Babylon is America.)

In Ezra 5:13, Cyrus, the Persian king, is called the "King of Babylon". He is the King of Babylon because he conquered it. He is ruling there. For now, America is literally ruling in Babylon.
