I've been taken to task in another thread for calling somebody a troll. The poster I called a troll had started a number of threads by linking to essays he had written. In every case, he didn't stick around to defend his Scripturally-indefensible positions. He was demonstrating troll-like behavior and I posted what I thought many were probably thinking.

The question that I have is, was it wrong for me to state that the poster was a troll, even though he was engaging in troll-like behavior?

I usually think of conscious intent when I think of trolling, and I think this particular case was just one of self-promotion. Only time will tell.

At any rate, "troll" is not on the approved labels list on this board. Please confine yourself to labels such as "liberal," "heretic," and "atheist" ("Godless atheist" if you're really on a roll).

I too was once scolded for saying a person was a troll. My position is if it looks like a troll, acts like a troll, and smells like a troll, it's a troll. If I recall correctly this particular person had been repeatedly banned, so there you go.

No. That's the definition of "troll" when used in that sense. Someone who is trolling for trouble.

Now, if you were calling him a creature from Scandanavian folklore...

Believe me... you were not the only one that said this guy was a troll! Most of the people involved in those threads probably thought so.

    So noted. :D

Isn't "Godless atheist" redundant? :D [IMG]

Perhaps the person who said something didn't know that we were using the word in the slang sense of someone who comes to message boards just to cause trouble.

I know that when I first started hanging out here and on other boards, I would hear people referred to as trolls and think, "Well, that was kind of uncalled for", not realizing that it meant something different than what I thought it meant.

Yes, but it sounds so much worse!

I actually haven't been called that on this board--I think "heretic" is as far as people will go here, and then they do generally get edited. That was on a different board in a young earth creation/evolution (theistic or non-) debate.

</font>[/QUOTE]"Heretic"? Oh, you're an ametuer. Back when Enda was here, you should have heard the things he and Aaron would say when they'd gang up on me.

I have been called liberal many times. I am rather proud of being perceived as liberal...meaning rather generous and kind and benevolent. Perhaps I was mistaken...........but I think I know to whom you refer, and the posts were rather "trollish" in my mind as well.

    Cheers,

    Jim

I agree! I thought so, too. I almost posted "Do not feed the troll!" but caught myself just in time. [IMG]

ccr, I did not have a problem with what you stated in that thread.

If it walks like a troll, and talks like a troll, then guess what?

I am the one who wrote the essays, and I'm not sure why I'm being called a "troll" for stating my beliefs and opening them up for discussion. I supported my positions from the Bible and most of the responses I got were personal attacks and superlative statements as opposed to Biblical discussion of the ideas presented.

I did back up my positions with Bible and if anyone has a different opinion, they should be able to express it with evidence from the Bible in a logical manner, without having to resort to personal attacks on my character (for example, someone suggested that I was a closet homosexual because I take such a strong stand against homosexuals - I find this ridiculous and unrelated to the discussion).

    Thank you,

Using scripture, and using it without twisting or taking out of context are two different things. Anyone can post scripture that appears to support their views, but it must be used correctly, untwisted, in contest to be truthful. From what I saw the usage was questionable, adding meaning where none was implied.

    Sanderson posted:

You posted somewhere around a half dozen times, linked to an essay, and that was it. You didn't respond to any contrary arguments and it appeared that you didn't want to debate anything. In fact, you ignored direct questions. You posted and ran. That's troll-like behavior.

Have you read the responses to the threads you started? Your essay about male gynecologists was ludicrous and not Scripturally-defensible. Your arguments about music don't stand up to the light of Scripture, and neither does your assertion that one must believe OSAS or they're not saved. These topics have been thorougly discussed, but I don't recall seeing you in there backing up your arguments.

I agree that this statement was totally uncalled for.

I'm not the only one who thought "troll", but I was the one who said it. I would love for you to prove that I was wrong.

    Not really.

Your "Christian women and male gynecologists" [paraphrase] essay was treated with the respect that it deserved. You made the statement in your online audio file that men become gynecologists because they "can be perverts and get paid for it too". Blatherings like this command no esteem from a rational mind.

You can "back up" a lot of things from The Bible; people have done it for centuries and slavery immediately comes to my mind. Yes, Levitical Law says that homosexuality is a sin. It also says that women who have sons are unclean for a week and daughters; two weeks. Women who are having their "monthly visitor" shall be put apart for seven days. Does your wife sleep in the backyard for a week each month?

I know that statement was crude, but that seems to match your intellectual zenith.

You might retort with something like "we're not under the old law any more", but I know you're familiar with Matthew 5:18.

I really had another bloke in mind...He pasted pages from books..I think he was Orthodox and lived in the frozen zone of Alaska.

I just viewed this chap as a typical hyper-independent fundamentalist, and I ignored his posts.

    Same results, I guess,

I did read all these threads, but I felt redundant responding to them when people were not refuting or even acknowledging the Bible that I gave initially to support my position, so I didn't see the point in giving any more scriptures.

For example, my post about a person not believing OSAS not being saved, I cited I John 5:10-11

"He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son."

God says clearly in this scripture that there are two types of people in this world: those who believe on the Son of God, and those who call him a liar by not believing the record.

The record is that God hath given to us ETERNAL life. A person who doesn't believe that is not a believer and is calling God a liar.

Aside from that, believing a person can lose their salvation is just a sugar-coated version of works salvation.

I used much scripture in my essay against male gynecologists, and everyone was very angry, but no one showed me any scriptures condoning nudity between men and women, which God clearly commanded against.

I read the threads to try to learn something, but it seemed to be a lot of ranting and raving as opposed to logic and scriptural precedence.

    Sincerely,

    Pastor Steven L Anderson
