    I am always encouraged when people ask to be taxed and say that they are ready for the additional burden.

    That is one of our great liberties that is so often forgotten. Pay for what we vote in.

    As a past member of the Red Cross Disaster Team, we were NOT allowed to have animals in the shelters and I don't think that will change (as per health codes) but there will have to be accomodations for the pets someplace that the emergency planners need to have in place. So, maybe a town that opens the high school as a shelter will also bring in a couple of tractor trailers for the pets. Not the best arrangement but it's better than leaving them home! Or else now shelters will have to have an emergency plan to increase their occupancy by 100%. I'm not sure how this will play out but those are some ideas.

    During Hurricane Katrina the covered horse arena in Monroe, Louisiana was used to house pets. I imagine similar venues were used elsewhere as well.

    And people are going to be refused shelter and transportation because of pets.

    This should not come out of my tax money. At least while there are humans with needs. Pet owners should pay the expence of this. Maybe a pet tax or even better pet insurance.

    If you want your pet rescued during an emergency, you must have a pet evacuation policy. How many pet owners would pay for a pet evacuation insurance policy?

    And most important. This should be run by a private company, the goverment should have nothing to do with it.

    Why will that not happen. Well so many people who cry for the goverment to rescue their pets, if they were told they would have to pay for it would leave the pets. Some people obviously would pay and if there is a market for such a thing there should be a buisness willing to accomodate.

    In reality, I think that the next time our nation is faced with a Hurricane Katrina-type situation that various animal rescue organizations will step in and handle the situation for the most part and that very, very few people will require the government's help in evacuating with their pets.

    Its easy for those who do not have a personal stake in the outcome of this tragic bill to be smug. But as I have said, the issue with room in shelters is already a problem that has yet to be addressed. So why wouldnt this add to the problem.

    Do you have a stake in this H. Nope!

    How many hurricanes roll through Arkansas each year? Let me count this out.

    Mitchell, when Hurricane Rita came through Arkansas it still carried a pretty good wallop here in the southern part of the state. People lost electricity.

    As I said, shelters will not be a problem as there are plenty of places for pets to be kept - such as the equine pavilion in Monroe, Louisiana. I think you have the mistaken idea, Mitchell, that people and their pets will be in the same room. That would be nice but unless it's a huge, huge facility the people will be in a shelter for humans and their pets will kept in a separate facility, such as the equine pavilion in Monroe that will be staffed by volunteers of animal rescue organizations, local kennel clubs, etc.

    I dont know what happens in arkansas H. But I do know the shelters have no room for pets in florida. And kennels are limited. arkansas is ready for this great. Florida is not. You can be sure of that.

    As I said, there would be very few instances where pets would be kept in the same shelter as their owners as that isn't the goal. The goal is to get the owners and their pets out of harm's way even if their pets have to be taken to a different city. They can be reunited after the danger passes.

    I am involved in dog events. I know how dog folks responded to Katrina and Rita and how they did yeoman's work gathering up pets separated from their owners and in getting them reunited with their owners. They will be even better prepared next time.

    As I said, I know what went on in Monroe, Louisiana, in the equine pavilion where I often compete with my dog in agility trials.

    H, I can appreciate your love for dogs. But that doesnt speak to the state of florida. there are so many problems in dealing with space in shelters. the need for shelters is so much greater being on a peninsula. Its going to be a problem down here without funds and new facilities to accomodate all this. I am not seeing any movement on that here.

    I am somewhat familiar with the dog folks in Florida. I don't see it being a problem.

    If they all ban together and save their dogs the God bless the all. But dogs are not the only pets out there.

    It is going to become a problem.
