Pelosi: Unemployment ChecksFastest Way to Create Jobs

What a crazy argument for a government program. What next? A proposal to create crime so we can hire more law enforcement officers or maybe another to increase taxes so we can employ more tax collectors?

How does the woman stay in office?

She stays in office because people keep voting for her. Why? I don't have a clue, but they do. People in this nation lack critical thinking skills and that lack is very dangerous.

    What Could Be More Scarier???

If anything should happen to Obama and Biden.... she'd be POTUS.

Let us all pray that we never have to call her President Pelosi :BangHead:

    Great post Dragoon!!!

She's right on this. Unemployment benefits create demand, which helps the economy by getting money moving. People out on the streets because their unemployment ran out and there are no jobs lessens demand, which could result in more job losses.

Government spending results in higher taxes.

Higher taxes result in fewer jobs because businesses lay off employees in order to have the money to pay the taxes.

    Lowering taxes stimulates the economy.

    Raising taxes kills the economy.

    This is very basic stuff.

History has shown it to be true over and over.

Nope. High taxes on the rich don't cause layoffs because the demand for goods and services are still there. For example, if the top marginal tax rate increased to 51%, it would not affect me one bit. (Note: even if it did, I would still support a tax increase because my political views are based on principles, not personal gain.) I'd still have the same amount of money and would buy the same amount of goods and services. Because people would buy the same amount of goods and services, the businesses would have to keep hiring people to provide the same. Also, taxing the rich stabilizes the economy. The Republican Great Depression was a result of the Republican tax cuts of the 1920s which led to a boom and then the bust of 1929.

How does unemployment benefits create demand? Demand for what? Demand for a new President and congress, maybe!

It's simple. The money gets spent, which stimulates the economy. People out on the streets don't buy anything.

EDIT: It's basic supply and demand. If the demand exists, the businesses must create the supply.

This sums up a liberal's view of taxes.

Tax the other guy all you want - it won't bother me.

    Higher taxes = lower profit.

You may have the same amount of money to spend - but if businesses decide that higher taxes take too much of the profits they won't bother to provide those goods and services.

You don't work for nothing - why should someone else?

"If unemployment is the best way to create jobs, then the economy won’t be fully functioning until nobody’s working, and that’s another goal Obama, Pelosi, Reid & company can now boast about helping us get closer to."

Have you ever tried to get along on unemployment? It doesn't even cover housing much less putting money on the street. I can take you to 5 families in our small community that are getting unemployment because f lay offs in construction. They are barely getting by. 4 of them have homes in foreclosure.

You have one (and only one) thing right. It does create demand. Demand for a new gov't.

I would hold the same views even if I were super rich. Even if it would affect me, my position would be the same. There are greater goods than my own personal monetary benefit.

I'm not saying that we should tax small businesses to death; I'm more focused on individual income taxes of the very rich and capital gains taxes. If you create the conditions that cause demand, then the supply will follow. I have nothing against making a profit. There's not even anything inherently wrong with huge profits, there's just greater goods than that. We need to raise taxes on the rich, cut unnecessary spending like some of our bloated defense budget, and balance the national budget and pay off the national debt. I envision an America that is closer to an European style social democracy, where we have a social safety net and equality of opportunity, and where the Constitution and rule of law is respected.

It's true that unemployment is not very much. They are still spending more than they would without it.

For each dollar given in Unemployment, $1.90 returns to the economy allowing those who are employed to keep their jobs...to further spend...which creates jobs. It's economics 101.

Wow...some folks here don't have even a rudimentary knowledge of the most basic principles of economics.

    Quick poll...

Does anyone here who is a business owner - that actually employs people - agree that unemployment benefits increase jobs?

I have - and this belief expressed concerning the effect on jobs by unemployment benefits is wrong, silly, ridiculous, and totally without merit.

I am dumbfounded that anyone would actually think it to be true.

Have you ever tried getting along with NO unemployment and no job? There is a huge difference in barely getting by and losing a home and everything, putting the person back onto gov't assistance which will cost even more in the long run. Keep the safety net there until the person lands on their feet...

Where do you get that? They lost jobs that paid higher wages and now get less money. They are going to spend less, not more.
