while working on my computer, the hour glass appears and i have to end the program and start over. I have Yahoo anti-spy and norton ant-virus.

Is there something else i can do for this problem. the yahoo and norton don't seem to touch it.

    Thanks

sounds like one of your spyware programs is NOT letting a supporting program run for the main program.

The main program just waits ...

What program has the error? Have you checked to see if there is an update for the program?

If all else fails uninstall the problem program and reinstall it.

If it is internet related you may have to give your firewall permission to allow it to run.

As others have suggested - what program?

Here's a five step fix that I posted on a different forum, but it might help you here:
Maybe these will help. If nothing else, it ought to help your computer runs faster and smoother.

    De nada.

I'm a mod on a computer forum, one of several in charge of the hardware section. I have helped troubleshoot enough stuff that I distilled the main points into this. If this don't cure what ails your comp, it at least eliminates all the other stuff that clouded the view of the real problem.

    I hope it helps someone.

    Here's an extra tid-bit.

For an online virus scan (just a scan, not a program), go here:
    http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
Click the "Scan Now. It's Free." link.

For an online adware scan, use the same link above, but choose "Spyware Scanner".

TrendMicro is a top name in antivirus and antispyware programs, and their online scans are very thorough.

MSCONFIG, from the list above. Be sure to uncheck it, hit Apply, and then reboot.

Quicktime and RealPlayer are both resource hogs and bloatware as far as I'm concerned. WMP is one of the few things that Microsloth got right.

    Hi Trotter!

I've used Housecall before, but hadn't noticed Trend Micro's spyware scanner. Thanks! [IMG]

I use CCleaner to clean my registry. Would you recommend TweakNow instead? And do I really need to use a registry cleaner on a new computer? (I've uninstalled a lot of pre-loaded software.)

    Computerjunkie,

I've heard that CCleaner is good. TweakNow is free, and came recommended by a computer mag I sometimes pick up.

Most of what I know and recommend comes through various sources like that, but I always check them out first.

    El_Guero,

Click 'Diasble All', then go back and check what you want/need. All I have checked on my rig is:
    *Mouse driver (four-button mouse)
*Graphics driver (for my graphics card)
    *Firewall
    *AntiVirus
    *AntiVirus Active Monitor
    *Microsoft AntiSpyware

I don't have anything else checked at all.

There is a free program that cleans up the Startup tab under MSCONFIG, but it permenantly removes what you take off.

    Trotter

    Thanks, Trotter.

One more question...do you delete anything a registry cleaner indicates is "safe" to delete?

(Seems we have a couple of "issues" going on in this thread...sorry, but I appreciate the help!)

El_Guero, have you checked Add/Remove programs in your control panel for RealPlayer and Quicktime? If you don't want the programs at all, you can uninstall them from there...that's what I did instead of disabling them from msconfig.

Yes. And any that it is unsure about you need to look over and see if they belong with something that you have already uninstalled. If so, you can axe them as well.

Unfortunately, some web sites and programs require them.

</font>[/QUOTE]Oops! Well, I uninstalled RealPlayer with no problem. Quicktime, however, gave me a popup box that said other programs may use this and "Are you SURE?" So I didn't uninstall that one. So far, I haven't had any problems with not having RealPlayer...but of course, now I'll be on the lookout!
