Why do we have User Names?

If a person uses a "user name" instead of his/her real name, isn't it for anonymity?

However, I have observed on this Board that when a person has a user name, that many times, they sign their real first name.

Even when they do not sign their name, other people sometimes use their first name anyway.

Should we just use our real names as user names?

    What is the appropriate netiquette?

    Or What is your opinion?

When I joined and was asked for a user name, it didn't even occur to me to use my real name.

I didn't make up a user name for anonymity, I just liked it. That's why I sign my real name.

I don't use a person's real name unless THEY use it first. I feel this is giving my permission to use it also.

However, if that person asks me NOT to use it - then I don't.

I feel closer to someone when I call them by their real name.

I don't know if that makes sense or not, but it's my opinion.

Maybe i should keep my mouth shut, i use
my real name as my User Name.

I know i've heard that ladies who live
alone should put "E" in the phone book
instead of "Elaine". But if one wishes to
stalk women who live alone, just look through
the phone book for initials instead of names.

If you search on Google for "Ed Edwards" you
will find there are several Ed Edwardses about.
So one would have to know more about me to
actually find me, like the state i'm from
(look around, it is on my post?)

IHMO it is proper to call people by thier
User name instead of their real name. If
the two happen to be the same (in my case they
are) then so be it. [IMG]

I don't believe there is any such thing as true netiquette. I've seen way too much vulgarity and ugliness in general on 'safe' boards to think otherwise. Anonymity breeds brashness.

If a person EVER uses their real name in a post, I believe it's wrong for them to assume that name will not be used in casual discussions. I wouldn't be introduced to someone as Joe and then call him 'hey guy I met at the grocery store' just because he didn't mean for me to always use his first name. We had a thread recently where people were asked about maiden names. Many gave their full names and spouses names and then are surprised when people remembered and called them by that name!

I use my real name every where online as does my husband. I have nothing to hide and find most usernames to be SO weird.

graciousloveroftheoneandonlygod can end up being a person who is anything BUT gracious! It's sort of like putting a 'honk if you love Jesus' bumper sticker on your car and then driving like an angry heathen. [IMG]

    can't spell today! YIKES

I prefer to stay anonymous because I have had credit card bills for things I did not purchase. Part of it is because of the job I once had and another is because I once received loads of Emails.
Another because you never know who reads the postings on BB. It can be anybody.

At a place where I once worked I could have looked up your name and told you how many children you had, your telephone number, where you worked and your residence, etc.

We had our bank account emptied from using a debit card to 'hold' a room when hubby was arriving late while traveling.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Like Sue, I thought we had to have a user name other than our real name when I joined the Board. When I was first on the internet, ten years ago, I was cautioned by the internet provider to not use my name in my e-mail or as a user name. Then to my surprise, with my strange, unique user name, the e-mail service provided my real name. Why did they want a user name, anyway?

I am amazed at what one can find about a person on the net. Just recently, two people died and I didn't see their wives' names in the Obit. I looked in the public records and discovered when they divorced. I knew their wives and would have attended the funerals to support the wives.

When I lived alone, I tried to be very careful in giving out personal information. I don't think it is that people have anything to hide, it may just be for their safety. Also there is so much idenity theft going on.

Even though using a person's first name is more personal, I wonder about using a woman's first name with as many readers as the Baptist Board has. Of Course, a Google search can find most anyone. [IMG]

I was surprised that so many women gave their full names on the Maiden Name Thread.

I have my real name on one of my web sites because I am 'dabbling' in my genealogy.

A distant relative living in NY, that I didn't know I had, contacted me after viewing the page. We exchanged information and we email back and forth all the time now.

When I worked at Blue Cross, the young woman who did data entry for me would 'look up' the health history of people she knew, liked or disliked, such as girls she was in competition with for a guys attention. If you had a name and knew their state, you could see if they'd been treated for STD's, had abortions, etc. The only people you couldn't look up was other BC employees!

I dont use my real name and maybe my screen name is a little deceptive - cause I really am not a potato. (Yall couldnt guess that, could ya?)

But even though I dont use my name, someone once recognized me from my BB pic. Scared me to death. The guy called "TaterTot?" from behind me, and I assumed it was someone who knew my clown personality. But it wasnt. Who'da thunk it?

I know you can find out alot about folks on google. Just type in someone's email address (or your own) and if you have ever posted it on another board or someones guestbook, it shows up. Scary!

I typed my name in the google bar and found some guy living my life. I emailed him and he never answered. He probably thought I was a stalker.

My username is a nickname I picked up several years ago. If you call my house and ask for me, they will give me the phone.

    My real name is Bigdaddydaveisinthehouse.

I started out using MargoWriter many years ago. At first it was somewhat of a safety thing, though I also just enjoy having other nicknames. You don't get to choose your name when you're born, so you should get to choose your own nicknames some of the time. :D

Anyway, Margo is the name I chose for French class. And Writer . . .. well, I'm a writer. [IMG]

Gib, I typed my name into google and found several people living my my life--and almost all of them are in the field of writing in one way or another! I E-mailed one of them, a university student in Georgia, and she emailed me back. We exchanged a few emails; it was kind of fun.

I typed my full name into google and nothing comes up, so I have decided that's what I will now use as my official writing name. I'll be the only one in google!!!!

I have posted under my real name on several boards, but finally ended up posting under my current name because many kept pestering us because of an ex-in-law. Though she's remarried now, she still gives out our last name as hers to her creditors  and they search for all people with my last name and contact them by any means possible.

It's not that I really care if people know who I am, though. [IMG]

    I've always been "Scarlett O."

That's always my user name on any message or discussion board. It's not necessarily always about anonymity. But sometimes it is.

I haven't got anything to hide from anyone...except maybe that night in Rio in '87...oh, never mind!

It's just a name that has stuck for years. I have used my real name from time to time on this board but when I PM anyone, I always use my real name.

It seem sort of silly then to use a username.

It's just a personal preference. It doesn't matter to me if people use their real names or not. I prefer not to, but others may be more comfortable with their real names.

To each his own...or her own!

    Peace-
    Scarlett O.

It's pretty obvious that if you want to find out particular/personal info about someone on the net, you certainly are able to do so.

However, it's my opinion that many of the folks on this BB give out WAY too much personal information. Most of you are obviously NOT kids that can be easily duped into a false sense of security or lured into meeting a Baptist Board online friend in person...only to find out that they're NOT Baptist, NOT Christian, and certainly NOT your friend. But I've seen far too many threads on here that made me nervous just reading the titles, and it worries me for the youth that frequent these boards.

I spent about three weeks just reading the "most recent topics" on the BB before I ever had to join or get a password, etc. I found out a lot about a lot of people on here just by reading what I could access from typing in "baptistboard.com". THAT worries me--because certainly there are MANY unseemly characters that lurk around bulletin boards all across the internet, looking for some trusting (usually kid) soul to con into meeting them somewhere. And if it's the "norm" on this BB for everyone to post all kinds of highly personal, descriptive information (including some real photos!), then I worry that the youth that post here will follow the lead of the adults--and end up getting hurt.

I just think it's a good idea to be as VAGUE as possible about specifics about yourself and your family when discussing them where literally millions of people can read about them if they so choose. And the more "real names" and "real info" that is shared, it creates a false sense of security where some unwitting, too-trusting-teen could get hurt. And I just can't stand the thought of that. :(

So, with that said, I guess you can figure out that I think it's a GOOD idea to use a pseudonym on ANY internet BB--just for safety's sake. Coz then a potential stalker won't know how much of you is "real", or whether or not they want to run the risk of meeting you in person. I think it's possible to be TRUTHFUL on this Christian website withOUT giving out too much information. [IMG]

My user name is my name... my last name.

I usually was known by my last name in school, and my dad still calls me by it.

Normally, I use the same name on any forum I go to. If it is already taken, I add 516 to it.

    In Christ,

I do not use my real name as my user name.
I do not even use the same user name on all boards I am a member of.

I already felt like one person stalked me from another Christian board when I used similar user names on different boards.

It is absolutely necessary to be as cautious as you can online.
I do share my real first name once I get to know someone real well.

I use my nickname for most places online because it distinguishes me as female. I sometimes sign my name to posts but feel like it confuses people because there is another person (male) here with the same name. I don't worry much about the last name. Not to many people ever remember it.

My wife calls me Daniel or handsome (though I don't know why).

My children call me Pa and my grandchildren call me PopPop.

Some friends and co-workeds call me or have called me Dan, Reverend, deacon, Toddy, and Daniel.

I sign official documents with my first and middle initials and my last name. I've been told that Albany wouldn't accept those documents that way - but they do. Maybe it's because it looks kinda of like DSM (scribbled) instead of what it really is.

The people at church call me Pastor Dan - and my sons-in-laws called me Reverend Pa (Revpa) before they married my daughters. (Now it's just Pa.)

Few have ever called me late for dinner - and now I suffer with diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholestral due to my past eating habits.

When I joined the board - I used one of my nicknames as my sign in name - and my real name as my user name. Could be that I was confused - or not used to being on discussion boards - but that's how it ended up.

All I know is that my grandfather - his grandfather - my grandson - and me all share the same first (Daniel) and last (Todd) names. We all have different middle names - though we really don't know what my greatgreatgrandfather's middle name was.

Daniel F. Todd (Revpa, Daniel, Dan, Pastor Dan, Reverend, Deacon, Son, etc.)

PS - but you can call me anything you want to! [IMG]
