this year's theme totally stinks... "Kingdom Capers" just happens to take place in Great Britain! :rolleyes how am I supposed to decorate for that???? I have 4 year olds... so I thought Sherlock Holmes would be cool as that means cool hats and magnifying glasses... but other than putting a trail of footprints around the room I have absolutely no idea where to go from there...

    any suggestions?????

That's some little paper doll Sherlock Holmes. Get some fake trees from someone in the church and how about making a phone booth out of a refrigerator box. You can also turn the box sideways and make it look like a double decker bus. The box could be painted to look like Big Ben. Newspaper print (end of rolls usually are free at the newspaper office) can be used on the walls with stones painted on.... Crowns for the Queen Mum.... Flags....

I'm looking forward to Kingdom Caper's! Character Counts!

    For decorating ideas, visit

    http://www.ngba.org

and click on "Photos of VBS Clinic" to see some of the decorations used at our Associational VBS Clinic.

Turn your room into the classic Sherlock Holmes study...bookcases full of old dusty books, a couple of reading chairs by a fireplace, a desk, a map on the wall of England, candles, a pipe, and a magnifying glass. If you have younger children you can always go more on the "Blue´s Clues" side of the sleuthing.

Hi UnashamedYouth. Lifeway's Idea Bank does have some good ideas.

Looking forward to seeing your pics. Our theme is the same. I'm teaching 3-4 graders.

We're doing a jungle theme this year.. anyone want to start making giant, felt palm tree leaves for me? :D

I do! Okay, first get some green spray paint and an old umbrella (golf sized, beach sized or just oversized). Open the umbrella and paint it green. WHEN IT'S DRY.... zig zag cut inbetween each wire to make the leaves! For the trunk, a carpet roll works GREAT. Take small and uneven pieces of masking tape and start at the bottom of the carpet roll sticking tape in an uneven pattern. Leave it sort of rough. Take some cheap 'stain' or brown shoe polish and lightly go over the tape. Stick the umbrella in the top and you've got the best looking palm tree you've ever seen!

We did Amazon Rain Forest last year. :D I didn't take pictures of my palm tree but it was a hit!

I did a smaller one for the Nile VBS the previous year using a regular umbrella and a poster tube. I also took a plastic Halloween skeleton and wrapped it in masking tape.... stained it... and had the GREATEST Mummy! I've got 40 years of ideas in this head of mine.

Let me tell you what we did.

Our sanctuary back wall has the kings bridge on it. Also, the top tier of Big Ben. We had the bridge empty the first night, because someone fell in the river (the baptistry) but now, we have a Ferrari on the bridge.

A moveable background is a school front also posing as a library front. Also, a big red bus is a background.

We also have a door that is in almost every play we do, a real flower cart, a phone booth, a well acting as trafalgar square, a coat of arms, and a park.

In the rooms, one is decorated as a big red bus. One has mazes. Others look like sherlock holmes offices/headquarters.

We used carpet roll inserts with posterboard leaves. They are huge.

I thoroughly enjoyed last year's theme Amazon Outfitters, but once we got to going on this one, it rocked more. We did our own drama and added inspector Gadget. It was a scream!

I dunno this year was just way too... I dunno it was cool for the older groups... but it didn't keep the attention of the younger kids(kindergarden and younger) it was a bummer this year :(

but hey after tonight(the "show" or whatever it is) it's over and they better have a better theme for next year or I'll whine and complain and ask theme to use a different company! LOL *pouts*
