Looking for family friendly vacations places which would be a hit with 4 kids from 8 to 2 months and a true vacation for mom & dad. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If you were in the midwest, I'd suggest Branson. I don't know about out west though, sorry.

Cruises have "kid" programs for all ages. Frees mom and dad to have a time for themselves.

Usually little of no charge - just part of the cruise fare. 4 kids might be tough though. But check it out.

    Thanks Mark & Dr Bob.

Branson is a good idea we have a bunch of Baptist relatives nearby. The discussions are always lively.

And I have been anxious to try a cruise but not sure which cruise line is well suited to families and departs from the CA, can you get adjoining cabins on ships?

All of them go out of LA or San Diego (to Mexico). Limited out of SF (to Hawaii) or out of Seattle (to Alaska).

All basic rooms have two single beds which are put together (with a bridge) to make a queen. Then you can have a pull out couch double or fold-down bunks. Think 4 in a room is tops -- and crowded.

You can get adjoining rooms, inside "suites" that are two bedroom with door between. We've gotten adjoining "balconies" so that between rooms is one long balcony and you go in and out from the seaward side.

Hit some websites, get some catalogs (free) from cruise lines and see if it might be possible.

I know Im a little late with replying, BUT
we camp, which is fun but not always relaxing with many children. lol
But this year we found a camp ground with a CABIN....ooh what a concept. The fun of camping but with a cabin with bed, bath, kitchen and yep even a TV. Im so looking forward to it because in previous years we have camped and with a baby addition this year bathing time was always a chore, not to mention midnight trips to the bathroom 10 minutes away.lol
So thats my recommendation...a campground but staying in a cabin. The only downfall is that since its in season alot of places require you to rent it out for a full week, which if you dont have a full week can be pricey, but we are going the week before its offically in season so we are going a Monday through Saturday and it worked out great. Thanks both of you for the camping idea we have a young baby as well so I wasn't considering it, but the cabin is a great idea, one of my fondest memories from childhood was a few days spent at a cabin with my family.

    God Bless

PS Congratulations on having your fifth child what a wonderful gift from God.

Born Again Catholic, I don't mean to rain on your parade, but four kids is not a "large" family.

    Not by Catholic standards anyway.

    Just teasing.

Thanks Ron you are right 4 is relatively small, but we are still open to life so there is hope and I like to start planning ahead. Maybe I should find a Catholic travel agent.

Four kids is enough when they are those ages! Since you live in California, you might try Montecito Family Camp. We did it when the kids were little and there is babysitting for the babes and activities for all levels and ages above that. We loved it!

    http://www.montecitosequoia.com/
    http://www.campchannel.com/camps/1664.html

Although they don't have actual planned babysitting for tiny ones (under two), the junior counsellors are always available for babysitting for extra pay during their off hours. We used that, too!

I cannot recommend a family vacation more highly than this.

If kids were older, I have a plan for the BEST vacation for kids and adults.

    1. Kids go to Church Camp for a week or 2
    2. Parents go to beach. Relax.

Everyone is happy with this plan! [IMG]

Seriously though...I'd recommend Wisconsin Dells, if it weren't so far away. The Black Hills would also be good...but since you live in California, perhaps the best -from a child's point of view- vacation would be at Disneyland.

Disneyland is not a vacation. It is an excursion which leaves you exhausted and out of temper at the end of the day...

For me, the idea of a vacation is to come back relaxed and loving your family more. It is not a planned martyrdom for parents!
