I am sure we have all heard things that are supposed to be in the Bible that are not in there...

For instance, "cleanliness is next to godliness"
or, "God helps those that help themselves"

Recently I found out that the old saying that "in the end of time we will not be able to tell the seasons" is not in the Bible...
And today my sister asked me where the Bible says "the lamb will lie down with the lion" I cannot find it.

What are some more sayings that you have found to not be in the Bible?

Many of the things that we were taught as Children turn out not to be in the Bible after all. That of course does not mean they are untrue or unwise.

I looked for that lion and lamb verse because I really believed it was there. The closest I could find was Is 65:25
Is 11:6-9 is also close where it says:

I was afraid this thread was going to be about the comma Johanneum and the pericope!

Mar 16:9 And when Jesus had risen early the first day of the Sabbath, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons.
Mar 16:10 She went and told those who had been with Him, as they mourned and wept.
Mar 16:11 And those hearing that He lives, and was seen by her, they did not believe.
Mar 16:12 After that He appeared in another form to two of them, walking and going into the country.
Mar 16:13 And they went and told it to the rest. Neither did they believe those.
Mar 16:14 Afterward He appeared to the Eleven as they reclined. And He reproached their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen.
Mar 16:15 And He said to them, Go into all the world, proclaim the gospel to all the creation.
Mar 16:16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved, but he who does not believe will be condemned.
    Mar 16:17 And miraculous signs will follow to those believing these things: in My name they will cast out demons; they will speak new tongues;
Mar 16:18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them. They will lay hands on the sick, and they will be well.
Mar 16:19 Then indeed, after speaking to them, the Lord was taken up into Heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.
Mar 16:20 And going out, they proclaimed everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the Word by miraculous signs following. Amen.

It took me a minute but I got it!

You know that is not what I was talking about...

What about "God will not put more on you than you can bear."?

Or, you will be known in Heaven as you are known on Earth.

Or Money is the root of all evil.

Those who would make such a claim will think that until they do not have any and need some to buy food.

As Tentmaker said, simply because the verbatims aren't there doesn't mean the concept isn't taught.

1Th 4:7 For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.

A proverb of Benjamin Franklin reproving slothfulness. Many reproofs of slothfulness in Proverbs.

Based on a common view of Rev. 22:1-5.

But "Lion and fatling" is close enough. The concept is there.

A conclusion usually derived from 1 Cor. 10:13. There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

Sounds like 1 Cor. 13:12. For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

The love of money, actually. 1Ti 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

Pro 16:18 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.

A summer is often a time of pride; but I don't think the Bible says that.

Calvin 3:16 For God so loved the world, He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever was elected before the foundation of the earth shall not perish but have everlasting life.

You are right Aaron.. most of these are in the context of the scriptures but we should make sure if we say, "The Bible says......" That the bible says it...

But I agree with you. The thoughts behind these sayings is in the Bible.

I would like to say on the one that says, "God helps those that helps themselves" may or may not be right... If it is talking about slothfulness it is correct...
But in salvation... it should say, "God helps those who can't help themselves."

    Here is a common misquote...
    Can you find the mistake?

    John 3:16
    (16)
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him shall not perish, but have everlasting life.

A Google of the phrase "elected before the foundation of the earth" yields
seven hits today, 3:36PM CST, 04 Mar 2007.

None of those hits are from the Bible.

Strangely, I just printed out my word study of
'before the foundation of the earth'. I'll need it
Sunday for 1 Peter 1:20 is in the lesson (1 Peter 13-25).

Here we go (Words of Christ in Red):

    ----------------------------------

The Greek word 'katabole' is translated foundation
and with 'cosmos' is translated 'foundation of the world'.

In the New Testament there are 10 occurances of
'foundation of the world'. There are two conditions:

    pro (before)
    apo (since or from)

Seven start with 'apo' (shown below in the small fount)
Three start with 'pro' (shown below in the Large fount)

    The differences are doctrinaly significant:
the three starting with 'pro' has to do with
God's love of Christ, God's selection of Christ,
and Christ's selection of we Christ-ones.

Speaking of Christ in 1 Pe 1:20 (KJV1611):
Who verily was foreordeined before the foundation
of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you.

    G2602
    καταβολή
    katabolē
    kat-ab-ol-ay'
    From G2598; a deposition, that is, founding;
    figuratively conception: - conceive, foundation.

    Rev 17:8 (KJV1769):
The beast that thou sawest, was, and is not, and shall ascend
out of the bottomlesse pit, and goe into perdition, and they
that dwell on the earth shall wonder, (whose names were
not written in the booke of life from the foundation of the world)
when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.

Foundation of the World in KJV1769:

    Mt 13:35 (KJV1769):
That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet,
saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will
utter things which have been kept secret
from the foundation of the world.

    Matthew 25:34 (KJV1769):
Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand,
Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom
    prepared for you
from the foundation of the world:

    Luke 11:50 (KJV1769):
That the blood of all the prophets, which was
shed from the foundation of the world, may be
    required of this generation;

    John 17:24 (KJV1769):
Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me,
be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory,
which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before
    the foundation of the world.

    Ephesians 1:4 (KJV1769):
According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation
of the world, that we should be holy and without blame
    before him in love:

    Hebrews 4:3 (KJV1769):
For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he
said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter
into my rest: although the works were finished from
    the foundation of the world.

    Hebrews 9:26 (KJV1769):
For then must he often have suffered since the foundation
of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath
he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.

    Revelation 13:8 (KJV1769):
And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose
names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb
slain from the foundation of the world.
