NEW YORK (AP) -- Wal-Mart is closing 269 stores, more than half of them in the U.S. and another big chunk in its challenging Brazilian market.

The stores being shuttered account for a fraction of the company's 11,000 stores worldwide and less than 1 percent of its global revenue.

More than 95 percent of the stores set to be closed in the U.S. are within 10 miles of another Wal-Mart. The Bentonville, Arkansas, company said it is working to ensure that workers are placed in nearby locations.

The store closures will start at the end of the month.

Kmart, Macy's and Sears are closing up some stores as well, the old brick and mortar stores are becoming a thing of the past. These Wal-mart stores are mostly the Express ones, and this is going to affect sixteen thousand people. DJIE is crashing right now, some economic recovery.

Most of them are relatively new small stores in small communities. An experiment that didn't work. They're cutting their losses and moving on. Smart move.

They're building one a few miles from me. We're somewhat rural, between two decent sized towns with their own Walmarts.

I was hoping for something different, maybe a Target. Oh well.

Not surprising. Retailers had a tough year last year. Americans were spending less overall and increasing their buys via the Internet. As Carpo said, most are small Express stores.

Of the 154 US stores, 102 are the smallish Wal Mart Express stores located in small communities.

Wal Mart is opening 300 new stores in 2016, including 60 in the US.
