You can get the details here:
    http://www.snopes.com/politics/sexuality/walmart.asp

Note that you won't be donating 5% by buying online, at Walmart.com, or at Wal-Mart stores.

Apparently, Wal-Mart isn't supporting same-sex marriage; they refuse to give same-sex domestic partner benefits, something offered by many other large retailers.

So, it's a little more complicated than that. Go to a competitor, and you might be donating to "domestic partnerships." Home Depot, Target, etc. In fact, about half of the Fortune 500 now offer such benefits.

But Wal-Mart doesn't. Go figure. No one said it was easy to be politically correct, on either side of the aisle.

I didn't want to say as any boycott of Walmart is good.

I figure it's economics - they buy good-will from the gay community by making contributions from sales coming from one web-site only but they save money by not giving employees any benefits they can legally avoid.

I'm no fan of Wal-Mart. But facts are facts. As you suggest, there are plenty of real reasons to dislike them.

One of the stunning facts is that over half of the Fortune 500 allow domestic partner benefits. It appears that corporate America has taken a poll, and found that it's more profitable to avoid discrimination against homosexuals than to discriminate.

And that suggests that particular battle in the cultural wars is decided, no matter what subsequent skirmishes bring.
