I know that the Angel told Mary to name her son Jesus but was that the first child named Jesus or was it a popular name at the time???

The angels told Mary to name her child Yeshua, better known as "Joshua". Since the NT was written in Greek, we got to know him by the Greek translation of his name, which is Iesus, better known as "Jesus".

"Johnua" was a somewhat common name among Jewish boys at the time.

"Jesus" is the Greek equivalent of "Joshua." We get the English "Jesus" from Greek and the English "Joshua" from Hebrew. Consequently, it is the same and would not have been unique to our Savior.

To illustrate, my name is "William" in English, but the same name is "Guillaume" in French.

'Jesus' was a very common name, kind of like John, Mike, Robert in this country.

Matthew 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. 22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. 24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: 25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

Isaiah 7:14 Therefore, the Lord Himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive, have a son, and name him Immanuel

Immanuel: God with us. In the Old Testament it occurs only in Isaiah 7:14 and 8:8. Most Christian interpreters have regarded these words as directly and exclusively a prophecy of our Saviour, an interpretation borne out by the words of the evangelist.
