You ever hear something that makes you mad enough to spit? In case you haven't heard or read the story the United Methodist Church has gone and done the unthinkable. An appeals board has reversed an earlier decision and re-instated a self-avowed lesbian, restoring her credentials, but most importantly, has openly denied the plain testimony of Scripture and defied our Lord.

I'm speechless! If that isn't indication enough--OY! May 1 is my last Sunday with the UMC and not a moment too soon.

According to the judgement of the higher UMC court - it is a bunch of technicalities as they claim that "they don't know what homosexuality IS".

I guess they found a loophole where they could debate "what the meaning of IS is" and thus placed a practicing Lesbian back in denominational spiritual leadership.

    How convenient.

Well, I'm disappointed. I was quite pleased with previous decision.

Wesley is not only rolling in his grave--we'll need a tachometer to gauge the RPM.

They may need some remedial Bible "reading" classes as well.

Can't just about anyone start their own Protestant or independent Baptist Church and do whatever they want as long as it's legal. I have a question. What is to stop homosexual Baptist churches from popping up all over the place?

However, the discipline of Baptist churches should be handeled at the local level. Whereas, in the UMC, they have a hierarchy of discipline. This isn't just a few churches saying it is an accepted practice, but an entire denomination.

Don't they just splint into more denominations?

    A few points:

    1. There is no difference between the UMC and Liberal "Baptist" Churches. As a matter of fact, I find it ironic that I found the following in the link Kathryn provided above:

    2. There are liberal "Baptist" churches which affirm the sin of homosexuality to their shame.

    3. The major difference, as I see it and understand it between the UMC doing this and a local Baptist church doing this is that it is the local Baptist church who has decided to do this as a local congregation. In the UMC, pastors and staff are appointed by higher ups and the Church basically has to take what they get. There is not much local autonomy in choices like this as there is in the Baptist Church. My guess is that many Methodist Churches probably are ok with this abomination, but I am guessing that there are some who really don't appreciate it at all.

I can't speak for the rest of them but after pastoring for 14 years with the UM; this single issue is the proverbial "straw".

UM churches are not autonomous. All the properties belong to the denomination. Folks can leave the UM but the buildings, etc stay put. What an excellent opportunity for all of you that have UMs in town. Trust me on this. The fields are white for harvest.

[sarcasm]They both are seeking justice in an inclusive society - why can't we all just join in a circle and sing KUM BAY YAH. [/sarcasm]

I really don't go out of my way to offend people but if I have to choose between offending them with a plain account of the Gospel or see them offended when they hear, "Depart from Me, I never knew you." I'll take my chances with the former.

Being a Methodist, I am so dismayed at the hierarchy of the Church. It seems, the higher up you go, the more removed from God they become. They seem to run the Church like a government or a corporation. What is the Council of Bishops’ purpose? Does their dialog ever accomplish anything?

Seems to me, the Methodists are becoming more of a secular organization with “traditional” roots in Christianity. Worse yet, they seem to endorse the idea of “relative truth” or “evolving truth”. I bet they would take their Cross down if some group though it offensive!

Still, at the local level, our Church is a good Church. For me and my wife, our Church is a mission field through teaching Disciple classes and music.
