I asked a similar question on another thread, but thought I might have a better response here.

What is the reprove of John 16:8-11? What is the work of the Holy Spirit in this world?

Any thoughts, any suggestions. No arguments.

I don’t think that we can readily brush these or any verses away with a trite answer. But the work of the Holy Spirit in the world is an important one.

    All the best,

    Roy.

It is the role of the Holy Spirit to bring conviction, not the law.

John 16 is layed out as follows:

Vs 1: Gives the reason why Christ warned His disciples.
Vs 2: Gives details of what they would suffer.
Vs 3: Gives cause of hostility.
    Vs 4: Addresses Christ’s solicitude.
    Vs 5-6: Addresses the disciple’s self-occupation.
Vs 7: Gives the promise of the Spirit.
Vs 8,11: The Spirit vindicates Christ.

In the concluding verses of John 15 the Lord had spoken of the world’s hatred, and this is still part of the theme in the first few verses of chapter 16. But in verse 7 He refers once more to the Holy Spirit, and in verses John 8:11 presents Him as His Vindicator.
