She said, "The tsunami was a wonderful opportunity for us." linkie to transcript

Thousands died, more were made homeless - an area of the world was devastated - but Dr. Rice sees it as an opportunity, a wonderful opportunity --- for us. Lucky us.

    Is this compassionate conservatism?

I agree with Condi. Tragedy is a wonderfull oportunity to show the world that we care. It does not say that the tragedy is wonderfull. It says the oportunity was wonderful.

    Daisy,

I think you took her comment some what out of context. Let me paste her whole statement...

She was responding to a question by Voinovich in which he stated,

"I think what we're doing in the tsunami right now is wonderful. I think it's -- but we have got to show people that we love them, that we are for democracy, that we want them to enjoy the same thing but we haven't any hidden motives.

What are you planning on doing in that area to respond to that?"

Rice states, in response to that,

"Senator, first of all, I do agree that the tsunami was a wonderful opportunity to show not just the U.S. government, but the heart of the American people. And I think it has paid great dividends for us."

You cut her off mid-sentence. Her point, in response to what Voinovich said, was that the tsunami gave the United States a wonderful chance to show the world "the heart of the American people". It was a good chance for America to show what America is really all about. Sometimes tragedy brings out the best in a person, community, and nation. Her statement made a very good point and I agree that we should use tragedy, at home and abroad, to show that America is a good and kind nation.

So I think you took her comment out of context.

    You asked:
    Is this compassionate conservatism?

When her statement is taken in context, and not cut-off mid-sentence, yes. However I would hope that it goes beyond conservatives.

On purpose. Daisy has to be playing some kind of game. She is not this far out of it.

==I don't know, nor am I going to try to read, anyone's motives (on this board). However I do think that anyone who took the time to read the whole section, which I did in less than five minutes, would know what Rice was saying. Sometimes political agendas (etc) blind people to the obvious facts that are right in front of them. It has, sadly, happened to me in the past. So I am in no place to throw stones. I just pointed out that the statement in the OP was taken out of context.

I know one thing from looking at that transcript - Boxer is an airbag. She is one long winded senator.

It's a real shame that the people of California are not represented by someone better than Boxer, but they voted her into office so it's their own fault.

Context means a lot. Anything out of context can be made to look like anything you want it too. When this quote was read both out of context and in context it says to completely different things. And a proper reading of it answers the op's question.

The context makes the comment worse.

in context is means it has paid great dividend for showing the world the heart of the american people. Meaning people of the world can se first hand we as americans have a heart for others, we help, we aren't just the bullies we are made out to be.
    how is that worse.

She meant it in the same way that other have meant when they say 9/11 was an opportunity to show the people of the world the bravery of New Yorkers and the American people in general, and how Katrina was an opportunity to show people everywhere the kind of compassion that we, as a people, can have towards one another.

She's talking about turning a negative into a positive.

    How about these statements?

What makes this country so amazing is that we've always been able to turn something disastrous into something glorious. We experience pain and suffering, we learn from the experience, and we move on to make oursleves better from it.

She has made other comments that come off insensitive.

I think Rice is insensitive and void of the real world and how others in the middle class down to the poverty line live...she has made other lame brained statements the one that will go down in history to bury her along with her Iraq incompetence is the 9/11 one.

Imho she has the Marie Antoinette syndrome(let them eat cake)

    she could

have corrected the above statement quickly but did not she just left it open ended which just caused confusion but lets look at her 9/11 comment.

"I don't think anyone could have predicted that these people would take an airplane and slam it into the World Trade Center."

Anyone!!!!! Condi...come on your supporters are saying your are smart ..this comment if I were running a political campaign against her would be front and center magnifying her incompetence and insensitivity.

BTW, I don't care if she is gay, purple, blue, or an aggie she should not hold high office. imho.

As a Christian you should be deeply ashamed of yourself for continually repeating an unsubstantiated charge. As far I can recall, you are the only poster on this board who keeps repeating this - over and over and over.

Also, the last time I checked Condi has no interesting in running for elected office - she never has and I doubt she ever will. She's an academic, not a politician.

Any time there is disaster around the world, that is a great opportunity for the USA to jump in and help and show the heart of the American people. I do not understand how that can ever be a bad thing.

    -------------------------

As to reading transcripts of what goes on in Congress, or seeing the snippets we do on TV -- I find it amazing that any business is ever taken care of for the American people.

==As I have shown, by putting her statement into context, she does not need to correct the statement. She is correct that in times of tragedy the United States has a wonderful chance to show who we really are and we are really about. That is not only true about a nation but also individuals. Sometimes disasters bring out the best in people and nations.

==Are you saying that you believe she is gay? On what basis (facts)? Hopefully you are not saying that she is gay because she is not married? Well I am not married but I am not gay. Singleness does not equal homosexuality. If you have no evidence to back up any claim you may be making here then it is nothing but unChristian slander. Hopefully, however, you are not saying that you believe she is gay. Hopefully you are not saying that you believe she is gay because she is single. Hopefully. However I will have to wait for your response to find out, right?

I am saying I don't care if she is gay ...as for you I don't care either what you are ..why bring it up this is about Condi
and the rumors and reports are out ...just as they are for Matt Drudge just as they were for Mark Foley and Ted Haggard.

time has a way of vetting the truth.

For those of you don't know about Condoleeza Rice, I would really suggest reading a bio on her. It is interesting reading and quite impressive. She is definitely more qualified for any type of leadership position than someone like Hillary. She makes her look like a high school drop out!

    Here is an online bio

Closing this since it has veered away from the original post, this thread is not about homosexuality.
