f your hand or your foot causes you to sin cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire. And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell (Matt. 18:9)

Is this verse about Hell or just getting rid of sin.

hell fire is only one thing -- hell fire.

(which is in fact the "lake of fire" in Rev 20 "The second death")

As a hand doesn't "cause" one to sin it must be hyperbole for emphasis or some sort.

It emphasizes the very REAL need to avoid sin and temptation lest the SAVED person be turned and bound for hell fire.

The whole point of the text only works if the person who is tempted by their hand to "steal" is in fact saved -- but if they yield to that temptation they will become lost and bound for "hell fire".

Bob

I have not been saved very long but I was not sure if Hell was a real thing or a state of separation from God. I heard a long time ago that Hell was just a garbage dump?

Ghenna was a garbage dump - place of burning - a waste place outside of Jerusalem and it was used as a "symbol" for fiery hell.

But fiery hell is a place of real fire and torment.

in Matt 10:28

Matt 10
28 ""Do not fear those
who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
Luke 12
4 ""I say to you, My friends, do not be afraid of those
who kill the body and after that have no more that they can do.
5 ""But I will warn you whom to fear: fear the One who,
after He has killed, has authority to cast into hell; yes, I tell you, fear Him!

Fiery hell is real - it burns real peopel with real fire.

We see it described in Rev 14:10 and find that it takes place "IN the presence of the Lamb AND of His holy ones" and we see in that same chapter that it is composed of real fire and brimstone.

We see it described in Rev 20 as the "lake of fire and brimstone"

Fiery hell is real - it burns real peopel with real fire. Christ says that it does what the first death can not do -- which is to destroy both body and soul.

We see it described in Rev 14:10 and find that it takes place "IN the presence of the Lamb AND of His holy ones" and we see in that same chapter that it is composed of real fire and brimstone.

We see it described in Rev 20 as the "lake of fire and brimstone"

The lesson here is "read scripture it is a safe guide". This subject is one of the most complete subjects described in the New Testament.

in Christ,

Bob

A saved man will not go to hell. He is saved.

Consider Origen (c.185-c.254AD) of
Alexandria, Egypt. People who think they take
the Bible more literally than others condemn
Origen for saying that there is much in the
Bible which can only be understood
on a spiritual level.

1 Co 2:14 (KJV1611 Edition):
But the naturall man receiueth not the things
of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishnesse
vnto him: neither can he know them,
because they are spiritually discerned.

Back in his day, a person prosessing faith
in Messiah Yeshua were trained in The Faith
for two years before they were Baptized
(some were martyred prior to Baptism, blowing
the concept you have to do the Work of Baptistm
to get saved.) Origen was a Training Mentor for
new Convertas.

When Origen came of age, he literally took
the verses in the OP (opening post).
He had his sexual members surgically removed
so he would be more interested in Serving
Messiah Yeshua than chasing women.
I really think Origen is condemned for being
way to literal but the words used to condemn
him say things like this passage from the Dictionary
of Premillennial Theology
(Kregel, 1996):

Others condemn him for the Alexandrian bad copies of
the New Testament (which today are two of the oldest
of the 5,000+ partial & full copies of original
/or near original/ Bible manuscripts available).
Apparently though, Origen had nothing to do with
these copies of the Bible.

I am going with scripture itself on this one.
