    Titus 3:9

9But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.

Here is a wrong use of genealogy.

    I got saved by Ollie.
Ollie got saved by her grandmother
    the Methodist Preacher.
    My Great-Grandmother knew her
    direct linage of salvation straight
back to John Wesley. John Wesley
knew his linage back to the Apostle
    Andrew (Brother of Simon Peter)
who preached among the pagans of Scythia
    (where the Ukraine is today).
I can trace my Spiritual ancestry back
to the Apostle Andrew. You can't trance
your Spiritual Ancestry back even three
generations. I'm way lot more Spiritual
    than You - I'm a Spiritual Thoroughbred
so I'm way better than you. But if you
like, I'll let you get a spiritual suntan*
as you bask in the glow of my Spirituality.

*Note: reminds me of a phrase in a song
"warm up to it's glowing" :)

Nother note: This is a wrong use of genealogy --
    prohibited by aforesaid scripture.

    Titus 3:8-9
"Faithful is the saying, and concerning these things I desire that thou affirm confidently, to the end that they who have believed God may be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men: but shun foolish questionings, and genealogies, and strifes, and fightings about law; for they are unprofitable and vain" (ASV).

Faithful is the saying, and concerning these things I desire that thou affirm confidently, to the end that they who have believed God may be careful to maintain good |deeds|. These things are good and profitable unto |people|: but shun foolish questionings, and genealogies, and strifes, and |quarrels about the law; for they are unprofitable and worthless” (ASV|NLT 1996, RSV 1952|ASV|ESV|ASV|ESV).
Titus 3:8 clarifies what is referred to at Titus 3:9. The point is that any intellectual pursuit which is unrelated to good deeds is "unprofitable and worthless."

Paul also warned Timothy about "doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds".

He then encourages him with "O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness."

Hopefully the Baptist Board participants are spending more time on the latter than the former. However, based on the # of posts by some I don't know how they could. I found the BB a few months ago and was was excited about the potential in it. I am afraid it is little more than a miniature bully pulpit and a venue for strifes of words.

My main fear is that well intended young believers are mislead here or seekers of the truth are turned off from from scripture because of the content they find.

Romans 16:17 "Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. 18 For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple."

When you wrestle with pigs you are going to get dirty.

It seems that this verse from Titus was trying to encourage Titus to not let the people he was leading get all wrapped up in Jewish stuff from their pasts (especially the genealogy and strivings about the law).

An application for us today would be that we too don't need Jesus plus anything else. Faith in Jesus as Lord alone is what we need to be a part of God's family. So I would say that this verse could speak strongly against Christian legalism or the mixing of Christianity with other religious experiences at the expense of focusing on our Savior!
