Through everything that I have studied through Baptist history, somewhere around the 1800's everything that they stood for and believed has changed.

What happened? Was there a great awakening? Was the early churches wrong? Or did the Devil creep in unawares and catch us sleeping and now we are believing lies? Are we in the great falling away?

There is a song we sing about the church, it is called "Wake up sleeping Giant". Is that where we are at?

In England in the late 1800's there was what is called "The Downgrade Controversy" .. when Spurgeon left the Baptist union Because of the drift away .. or 'downgrade' from scripture. Was true in other countries as well. Sadly the slope seems to get steeper all the time ..
    Regards

What is it that you feel has changed? Alot of Baptist groups are doing better now than at any other time in their history.

There are too many to list. It is obvious that today's Baptist don't adhere to what Baptist have taught and practiced throughout the centuries. My question is: Were our Baptist's forefathers wrong or did Satan creep in and now we believe lies?

Satan crept in and continues his mission: to destroy the church and keep the lost in his hand.

This is all far too vague - can someone who is making these sweeping assertions give specific instances of what they are referring to?

    Yours in Christ

    The Downgrade Controversy

This article explains Spurgeons actions. Those who have not been in a seperated church, or have not left one will most likely know not of what we speak. I believe that this has been consistant throughout church history. When the times really wained, revival broke out to keep the hurches alive, thus the Gospel kept spreading. But for some reason, revivals have deminished, and the churches have been on the slope heading downhill. What people brag on is a very sad excuse for what churches used to be. Some are so blinded by Satan that they can't see the problem. Thus we have the remaining few that do, or the remnant before the return of Christ.

Brother Glen, that may be it. A house divided can not stand. That is my main thrust of study. We have so many man made doctrines and beliefs about what you should or shouldn't do, what is really going to happen with the church in the end times, that I think history speaks very clear as what is acceptable in God's eyes. Whenever His people are in accordance to His will, He blesses them, but when they are out of His will, He seeks to chatize so they will return to Him and His will.

It would be interesting to trace baptist offspring... How many denominations not called baptist had their birth by the Baptist Split of 1832 and came from the Baptist ranks?... Brother Glen
