What is hell? Is it punishment for those dying in their sins?
Or is there no sin that has not been paid for? If so is it merely a choice?
    Some just like it hot?

Some of these things really need to be thought out and studied.

    Cleaning nasty toilets.

    Paying taxes.

    Brussell sprouts.

Hell is anyplace where God is absent.

Hell is eternal separation from God for the devil and his angels and those not forgiven in Christ.

Not to mention containing the Lake of Fire.

THe ancients believed in Sheol (the place of the dead) Not really identified as a place of punishment but for a place where the dead went. Hell or Hellos also the place of the dead but then more things got added such as the river styxx and the boatman who you had to pay wages to get accross. Then came the reward which was nothing more than a field where you were at peace and could fellowship with other people the Romans called that place the Allysian fields. But Sheol or hell as far as the bible was actually a real place a valley of the dead. And as thoughts progressed toward this subject punishment of Gods wrath or rewards at God's pleasure. Then in John's Revelation we have the Lake of Fire which is punishment in which all the angles and rebellious humans are tossed in. That together will then be thrown into hell. I'm not saying there is no hell but I thought the writing development was interesting.

I quite agree with Sproul on this one. I always described Hell as a place of separation from fellowship with God. I left all other descriptions out because none of us really knows.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Rev Mitchell perhaps that is the closest we will see this side of it, lol.
Well, Hillary would have been even worse (if that is possible.)

Death and hades will be cast into the Lake of fire that burns in torment for ever and ever. Satan and his minyons, the beast (antichrist) and false prophect will be there . . . and every soul not written in the Lamb's Book of Life.

Jesus and NT writers used metaphors and classical language (like g'henna, the continuously burning garbage dump outside Jerusalem, or hades from Greek literature) but these all pale in comparison to the Lake of Fire.

In heaven, in front of the throne of God, is a crystal sea, reflecting His glory. That is one side of the picture. The other is a sea of fire of the damned that burns in torment for eternity.

Vivid pictures painted so we would (hopefully) seek the former, not the latter!

Since the AJ thread drew me back, I guess I'll chime in here with a question. . .

If God is absent from Hell, how can he be deemed to be omnipresent?

Bravo!:applause: God is omnipresent, so he logically must be present there, too. Perhaps ETERNAL separation from God and others is hell?

Right now my idea of a hell would be eternal campaigning without the election. . .calls at dinner, signs everywhere, political arguments, mudslinging commercials, etc. without end.

It is referred to in the book of Revelation as the second Death, meaning a separation.

The lake of fire is not in hell. Hell will one day be cast into the Lake of fire. Rev. 20:14. Also, in Rev. 20:10, the devil, beast, and false prophet will all be cast into the lake of fire and tormented forever. In Rev. 20:15, all those whose names are not written in the book of life will be cast into the lake of fire. It doesn't say they will be tormented forever. However, since the lake of fire is forever, and they will be cast into it, it stands to reason that their torment will be forever.

So hell is not the final destination of the condemned; the Lake of Fire is.

My bad. I'm not an expert on Hell and I should have read the verse I was referring to first. The point is there are several components to it.

    I agree.

I assumed when I answered previously that the OP was asking about the Lake of Fire, not "hell" as in "grave."

I didn't think we had to go through the basics about hell often meaning grave when it's pretty clear that the OP is about the final destination of Satan, his angels, and those not forgiven in Christ.

We had a brief debate in SS this past Sunday on whether God is present in hell. That might be a good thread because it is slightly different from this OP.

    Sorry!

It seems some were referring here to "hell" as if it means the grave. I was trying to point out that yes, sometimes it means that but that the OP is not asking about the grave but the Lake of Fire.

Did I clarify or confuse further? [IMG]
