Jim if Canada wants to employ socialism/communism then more power to you all. I do believe you have a rather skewed view of what is going on up there. However, that is contrary to what this country was founded on. And we will not let our foundation be so easily set aside.

No matter who is elected tomorrow will have to do some reduction of expectations because of the dire economic straits the current republican administration has put us in. In the debates, neither candidate would answer direct questions from the moderator about which of their programs would be significantly impacted by the severe recession/depression. There wasn't any difference in the way both candidates dodged this question. It's understandably because they both want to get elected.

The Dems refused regulation of Fannie Mae and FReddie Mac. They denied any problem with the system of forcing subprime loans on lenders. On this isse Obama, all the Dems, and you are engaging in intentional fallacies.

Fascism is where government and big business teams up to turn the working class into serfs. Sound familiar?

What does it mean to "protect" a citizen? Does it mean to "protect" them from a Christian telling the truth about what God has said about various issues....same sex "unions", false religions, abortion, war, hating others etc.?
I don't support Phelps. What he preaches is no more the truth of the gospel anymore than Islam is a true way to salvation.

Do you think we should pass laws to keep Phelps to preaching? Should we throw him in jail for "hate speech"?

I do not want laws passed to shut Phelps up. I know that those same laws can/will be used against true Christians for the issues I mentioned above.

If you cannot protect the right of Phelps to speak, then you cannot protect, ultimately, anyone's freedom of speech.

    peace to you:praying:

Such laws have been passed ... the federal 'Respect for Fallen Heroes' law and many state laws, most of them restricting funeral protests to 300 feet away from the grounds and/or an hour before or after the ceremony. Were these law not targeted directly at him?

Sorry, but you have no room to be calling that post off-subject :) It's just as much on subject as your comment that he was responding to (quoted below).

In responding to your post, his post was explaining that the left-leaning congress forced lenders to put out loans with very little hope of successful repayment...sounds like socialism to me. "Take" money from the companies by force of legislation and give it to homebuyers with low or unstable income and poor or nonexistent credit...then stand in amazed wonder when the lenders start failing.

The government shouldn't be forcing lenders to make such high risk loans.

The American dream of home ownership for those who can't afford a conventional mortgage is better undertaken by organizations like Habitat For Humanity (go volunteer sometime and learn some skills too, I encourage everyone). There, it's well known what's being done is charity, but it doesn't bankrupt anyone.

Forcing the lenders to make these risky loans was tantamount to government confiscation of that capital.

Since the question was asked in the title, I will try and answer "What is socialism?" Then you can figure out who is, or is not engaging in it, in these United States.
'Nuff said? Or do I need to expand on this, a bit later?
