Good ones Alcott. Motorcycle helmets are another one. We should have the freedom to be idiots. Are there any small business owners among us who can testify to violations of their personal freedoms? They are the ones who get screwed worse than anyone. Those on this board who whine and cry about the president trying to protect us from Islamic terrorism should talk to a small business owner if they want to talk about rights taken away.

Functionally, there is no difference. You'd still have the "threat of the gun" at the end of the year.

Several years before 9/11 a family member was stopped at the airport and searched with no explanation. She thinks it was because she flying on a one-way ticket returning from her father's funeral. She has not had a problem since.

I consider the ability of the government to conduct searches without warrants to be a loss of rights. This goes hand in hand with restrictions on habeas corpus, the right to confront your accusers. These rights have been weakened and are in jeopardy. It's not really like catching pigs. It's more like boiling frogs. If you throw a frog into boiling water, it will jump out. If you put it in a pan of water and gradually turn up the heat, it will sit there until it is too late.

I teach the Defensive Driving course. NY law requires that I use a facility that is accesible to crippled people. In the ten years I have taught the course, I have never had one person in a wheelchair attend my class. Yet, I once had a class in a church on the second floor. Since there was no elevator, I was infomed by NY State I could no longer use that facility. I teach one class a month, with an average of 5 or 6 students per class. Would you say my rights have been taken away.

My basic thought is: The goverments job is to protect me from others, not from myself.

You are absolutely right. People around here cant see the forest through the trees. We lost all our freedoms in 1913. When the Sixteenth Amendment became part of the Constitution, the American political order, which rested on the axiom of inalienable rights, underwent a major operation. The great debate in the Constitutional Convention of 1789 was over the question as to whether this country should have a republican or democratic form of government; the question was finally resolved in 1913 when the door was opened for the introduction of the socialistic forum. The American public fell for the rhetoric of Democrats like William Jennings Bryan and Woodrow Wilson and opened the door for socialism in this country when this amendment became part of the Constitution. In 1913, the absolute right of property in the United States was violated. And we are concerned about being checked at the airport for a box cutter. What we should do is hand every one a gun before they get on a plane and then collect them on our way out and hijackings will cease.
