Is the written Word of God intended for all mankind, or did God have His word recorded and written down only for His people ?

    Acts 17
29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.
30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:
31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

I Cor 10:11 gives another angle:
"Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come."

I Cor I:17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect. 18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.

It is for everyone but only the saved can understand it. It's all in who you know.

It's for everyone. This is why it is translated into every language.

Therefore go, and make disciples of all nations...

Even a child can understand the basic message. In Matthew 10, Jesus sent out UNSAVED fishermen to preach the Gospel to the Israelites -- the LOST sheep of Israel, those whom, John 1 tells us, rejected Him.

And then there are Paul's words in 1 Timothy, chapter 2:

I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone -- for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, WHO WANTS ALL MEN TO BE SAVED AND TO COME TO A KNOWLEDGE OF THE TRUTH. For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave homself as a ransom for all men -- the testimony given in its proper time.

"The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned."

Intended for the world. Benefits for the world. Saving grace understood only by those so enlightened by the Spirit of God.

God wants people to know the truth. He wants ALL people to know the truth. NONE of us understands it fully. Now we ALL see through a glass, darkly. Only later will we see face to face. But all people have the opportunity and ability to respond one way or another to the truth that they see and do understand. Creation is one of the revealers of truth. The Bible is the other. Two witnesses. Available to all, done for all.

We are not saved because we understand saving grace. We are saved because we believe in Jesus. Understanding is not a prerequisite. We are not saved by our intellect. We are saved by Christ.

It was Mark Twain that said, "It's not the parts of the Bible that I don't understand that bother me; it's the parts that I do understand."

    Hello, brothers and sisters:

Thank you for your replies, and I respect your views on this matter. But, personally, I don't believe God intended His Word for all mankind's benefits.

Rather, His Word is meant for the benefit of His people, and to damn those who are not His, at the last day.

    Again, thanks.

I find it difficult to say that God did not give His word to everyone. I also find it difficult to believe He gave it to all with the idea that it will be ONLY "practical" or "beneficial" to most who hear it. It's there because He cares about all of us!

Can the lost even understand the Scripture? If not, then why exactly would it be FOR them?

    Can the lost understand Scripture?

They may disagree with Genesis, but they understand it enough to do so!

The history up until Psalms is clearly understandable, although even Christians disagree about Job.

Psalms contains much the believer continues to discover through time and study, but even the unbeliever can understand the praises and the human dilemmas of David and the other writers.

The other books of poetry are the same as Psalms in that way -- pretty clear to anyone on the surface, but they also contain much that we continue to discover as we study.

The prophets are pretty clear where the historical material is concerned but, as we have seen here on this board, they are a matter of disagreement in many areas even among believers.

The four Gospels are clear in their story of Christ. Even believers, however, have arguments about some of what He said!

Acts is essentially history and easily understood that way.

The epistles are very clear in some areas to all, believers and unbelievers, and provoke arguments in other parts, again even among believers.

Revelation is a matter of constant argument among believers!

So what part of Scripture is not understandable to the pagan which, a good part of the time, is not also a matter of argument for the believers?

It is not a matter of understanding Scripture. The Bereans examined their Scriptures daily to see if what Paul said was true. Were they ALL saved???

Again, Scripture is for everyone. Christ is for everyone. He atoned for all sin.

It is what a man chooses to do with that knowledge and that understanding which makes all the difference.

Helen and Diane, I am referring to the spiritual content of the Scriptures. I think anyone can understand the facts contained within the Scripture.

1 Corinthians 2:9 But as it is written: "Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him." 10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. 11 For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.

    Thank you, Daniel David.

You hit most of why I believe the way I believe about the Word of God.

Anyone can walk into any bookstore in the free world and buy a Bible in any version but if those words were not meant to nourish their souls it will just be a book of fairy tales, legends, and superstitions to them, and the Names of Jesus and Jehova simply names of the many gods they already have or which they hold with disdain.

On the other hand, somebody in a religiously repressed land may be walking around with a heavy burden in his heart and a consciousness of his sins and chance upon a page or two of Matthew or Luke or John and somehow identify with the words on those pages.

A learned Theologian with all the necessary resources to research the Biblical languages may read the words "all have sinned" and not have it register in his heart, though he knows exactly what they mean, in his brain.

On the other hand, many years ago, I asked a simple farmer, who signs documents with his thumbprint, "does he agree with what God says in the Bible that all, including him, have sinned" ?

His answer was, "I've never been more than 50 kilometers from my place of birth, and most of my growing years, my only association had been with fellow farmers. I minded my own business, and have never been hauled to court, neither do I fear any man in the darkness of this village. But if God says I have sinned, then He knows whereof He speaks, and I can only place myself under His mercy."

The learned historian with his strings of M.A.'s and Ph. D.'s may research the history of national, physical Israel both archaeologically, secularly, and scripturally, and not understand at all that Israel is a picture of God's lost, and redeemed, spiritual Israel.

On the other hand, the child of God, with barely a graduation certificate from elementary school knows the spiritual implications of events in physical Israel's history.

The Bible was meant for God's people and them only.

Jesus Christ's blood was meant to cover His people's sins, and theirs only.

But, like I said, I respect each and everyone's views, except if their views demean, disrespect and belittle the Son of God in any way.

    God bless.

See, I see YOUR views as taking power from the cross of our Lord and savior!

1 Corinthians 1:17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect. 18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written: "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, And bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent." 20 Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? 21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe.
