What should we pay?

    Similar story here. We got bids on replacing the floor in our kitchen, dinette area, entry way, bathroom. All told it's about 375 square feet. The flooring store said they would send two guys out and they could get it done in one day. The cost--$2,700! Just for the labor, not the materials! $2,700 for 16 man-hours?! Are you kidding me--$168 an hour?! (Yes, I realize the flooring store needs to get a lick of that labor charge as well, but c'mon...)

    We bought the flooring materials and had a guy from church install it for $700, which was about $25 an hour. Probably shouldn't have taken as long as it did but we talked about church and theology quite a bit. In other words I bothered him while he worked. LOL.

    Actually it's a Cuisinart. Don't Bunn coffeemakers have two water reservoirs, with one of them always being heated?

    That's less than $16/hour shop time. If the shop bills at twice their hourly pay rate the workers are getting roughly federal minimum wage.

    A zillion years ago it was common for the shop rate to be twice the cash pay rate (excluding benefits). Now it seems to be roughly three times.

    He DID get injured on the job. These lights are razor sharp and so I offered him two bandaids. :)

    He ended up working 20 hours and we paid him $500. He had a fit, we forced him to take it. He was willing to do it for nothing but he did a LOT of work over 4 days. He had to go into our attic with blown in insulation and he lost his reading glasses in there. He got 2 cuts on his hands from the lights. He had to come here 4 days in a row. AND he's a perfectionist. LOL Now we're ready to do some moulding on the cabinets and paint. But I need to figure out what color!!!!!!

    This happens in my neck of the woods. The general thing is to offer the minimal wage for time here about $15.00 an hour, as it will not be declared and will go into the good fella's back pocket. Depending on circumstances, a bottle of his favourite drop and/or an offer of a dinner date is good.

    Definitely, do not offer him say a free burger or similar which I for one would think offensive as it is a tremendously under valuing of his time.

    If there is reluctance on his part....offer say tickets or similar for a family outing.....

    $25/hour under the table is good money! Roughly $55K/take home.

    Best brewed coffee is french press or espresso.
