I have left my position as intern at our last church. Last Sunday morning I spoke to the pastor of a small church near home before church and went on to do my last day at the other church. Wed night my family and I attended and again Sunday. The pastor and his family had us over for lunch after church.

    It was a good visit.

Now here is the situation... We have our home up for sale and are planning to make a major geographic move soon. probably by mid June. We would like to help at this church, and the pastor said he was praying that God send him some help. It seems that God intends for us to do so. However, He said we would have to be members before we would be allowed to serve in a ministry capacity at this church. He knows we plan to leave in 3 months timeframe and has no issues with that, except that he has been praying that a family like us would show up and ask "How can we serve your congregation?" instead of "how can you serve me?"

We committed to pray about it and he has stated that he needs a VBS director and I am experienced from my training. The VBS is end of June and we really had every intention of being gone by then. I really need some prayer and advise here. Should we just do what we can as non-members and bide our time or should we join the church knowing we are leaving soon and serve Him among that local church while we are waiting?

We have been up front about the fact we are leaving the area as soon as we sell our house.

If the pastor knows the situation I would say join the church even in the short term.

    Questions:
Do you feel God called to make the major geographic move?
Do you feel called to direct this pastor's VBS?
Would it be better to help train a person already in this small church how to conduct a VBS? Would this serve This small church just as well?Try bouncing that off of the pastor and see what he thinks. Is the pastor hoping that if you do the VBS that you will feel called to stop your move?

I agree with C4K. I would join, get involved, and see if God closes the door on your move.

    Another option:

Jump in, get involved, begin the VBS prep, but enlist someone as a director-in-training.

My wife has been the VBS director a few times, and has used this approach (just in case she couldn't be there, or an illness came up). It worked out beautifully for her. This way, you are there, you are involved, and if your move is still a go you can go knowing that the church's VBS will be in good hands that you have trained.

    In Christ,
    Trotter

That's wise counsel, considering that hopefully the person trained would be around after you made your move and could do VBS for years to come.

Thanks for your advice. My wife and I have prayed and feel the best route would be to join in their ministry and do all we can to help build this church until the Lord gives us the green light to go. I am sure we will learn much in service here. Praying for a speedy send off though. But we are burdened to serve Him. We will serve every chance we get.
