World government and world socialism. Those are the explicit goals of the Socialist International, one of the planet's most influential organizations, but one that is virtually unknown to the vast majority of Americans, since it is rarely reported on in the United States' major media.

The headline story that currently tops the home page of the Socialist International's website reports on the organization's influence and clout at the recently concluded United Nations Climate Change Summit in Copenhagen, Denmark. The brief article, however, does not even begin to do justice to the Socialist International's central role, not only in pushing the current alarmism over global warming, but in actually launching and promoting the global militant environmental lobby, from 1970 to the present day.

Your correspondent not only witnessed first-hand the Socialist International (SI) at work in Copenhagen, but also witnessed the same at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), better known as the Earth Summit, in Rio de Janeiro. I wrote about that at the time ("Socializing at Rio: Socialists Run the Earth Summit," August 10, 1992), pointing out, for instance, the key role at the summit of Norwegian Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland, who was then Vice President of the Socialist International, and noting as well the prominence of other SI leaders at UNCED.

The Socialist International was most notably represented in Copenhagen by its president, George Papandreou, who is also the current prime minister of Greece.

"At this time, we are observing the birth of global governance. We must, however, agree to an obligation and be committed to carrying this out," Papandreou stressed, while addressing the UN summit on December 18.

    Overview

A new CFR-sponsored Independent Task Force report, North America: Time for a New Focus, asserts that elevating and prioritizing the U.S.-Canada-Mexico relationship offers the best opportunity for strengthening the United States and its place in the world.

"It is time to put North America at the forefront of U.S. policy," the report says. "The development and implementation of a strategy for U.S. economic, energy, security, environmental, and societal cooperation with its two neighbors can strengthen the United States at home and enhance its influence abroad."

Chaired by David H. Petraeus, retired U.S. Army general and chairman of the KKR Global Institute, and Robert B. Zoellick, former president of the World Bank Group and chairman of Goldman Sachs's International Advisors, the Task Force is composed of a diverse and distinguished group of experts that includes former government officials, scholars, and others. The project is directed by CFR Senior Fellow for Latin America Studies Shannon K. O'Neil.

White House Unveils $100B “Climate” Schemes, Mocks Congress

The Obama White House, working with a taskforce of alarmist “leaders” from across the country, unveiled the latest chapter this week in what it called the “important steps” that the administration is taking to purportedly prepare America for the dangers of supposed man-made “global warming”: propagandizing children, commandeering state and local governments, and much more. The fresh announcements about Obama’s “climate toolkit” and the taskforce “recommendations” came as record cold swept much of the nation and most Americans faced unusual subfreezing temperatures — a humorous and regularly occurring phenomenon amid “global warming” announcements often described as the “Gore Effect.” The price tag of the anti-“warming” schemes for beleaguered taxpayers could be upwards of $100 billion, according to news reports. And the administration says its schemes cannot be stopped.

Amid the announcement, top administration officials were busy mocking the American people’s elected representatives — the same people the White House expects to force their constituents to fund the “climate” machinations. Even more outlandish, perhaps, were administration claims that Congress would not be able to derail the schemes. “I believe the president will complete the actions,” claimed John Podesta, Obama’s radical policy architect, on a November 17 conference call. “It is a top priority of his and I don’t believe they can stop us, notwithstanding Sen. McConnell making this a top priority to leave the status quo, to leave the air dirtier.” Of course, independent scientists have long ridiculed the notion that the essential-to-life gas carbon dioxide — exhaled by humans and required for plant life — constitutes “pollution” that makes the air “dirty.”
