“Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. ”
    John 20:30–31, ESV

John states the reason for his gospel.

What other books in the bible clearly express their purpose?

1 John gives a couple of purposes: that we wouldn't sin (2:1); that we wouln't be led astray (2:26); to know we have eternal life (5:13).

Those are a few that i can remember.

    Thanks!

I'm particularly looking for some examples from the Pauline epistles.

    Preach and teach the gospel.
Romans 1:15 So, as much as is in me, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also.

    1 Corinthians
    Divisions in the church.
1 Corinthians 1:10 Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

    Church discipline.
1 Corinthians 5:5-6 To deliver such a one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. Your glorying is not good. Know you not that a little leaven leavens the whole lump?

    Spiritual gifts.
1 Corinthians 12:11 But in all these works that one and same Spirit, dividing to every man individually as he will.

    The importance of the resurrection.
1 Corinthians 15:19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most to be pitied.

That's all tonight, I'm too
