When did baby baptism vs. adult baptism start?

    Before the heat of this discussion reaches the boiling point, let's try to regulate our heat. Remember, forests logged off and turned into paper for books on this issue. Not to mention, the wood used in the execution of Baptists and Proto-Baptists over the centuries.

    Even entire households were baptized in the NT. Why should we assume there were no infants?

    I don't believe the NT teaches baptismal regeneration in any kind of automatic, or magical sense. BUT a straightforward reading of many passages would indicate that Jesus, Paul, Peter, etc. seemed to think there was definitely a connection of some kind with baptism and becoming a christian. Obviously, faith is what saves us, but it sure looks like the normative case in NT times was that immersion was the occasion when saving faith was expressed, and responded to by God. The situation with Cornelius and his household is an example to us that God is in control and not bound by any act on our part, regardless of what the "normal" process may have been. It is interesting that Peter orders their baptism ASAP after their conversion.
