    When does school start this year where you live? Seemingly it starts earlier and earlier every year. Didn't it used to start after Labor Day when we were kids??

    It started early this week here.

    Used to always start in late August when I was a lad.

    I still love the Staples commercial from a few years ago. Dad is walking two very sad kids down the aisles, singing "it's the most wonderful time of the year..."

    If many liberals get their way, school will go all year round, so we essentially have gov't day care. And they also want to lower the compulsory age before age 6.

    Our kids have classes on Aug. 20 at their school, but have to attend an orientation on the 18th (yes...a Saturday).

    County kids started on the 9th. City kids start tomorrow (13th).

    Ours started today. However, the first week of our kids' high school is called "Warrior Week." The entire student body (about 400) goes to Sharp Top Cove, a Young Life retreat center in north Georgia, for a week to prepare for the coming school year. Then the kids start hitting the books next week when they return. It's really a great way to kick off the new school year.

    Interesting. Why's that?

    BTW, our high school starts classes on Tuesday, but I think that's to give them a bit of a rest since they return from the long trip late, late Friday night.

    Starting midweek gives us all a short week to get back in the routine. We have Open House tonight. The new kids come in the morning to spend some time with their student mentors wandering the corridors.

    But mainly for the short week. Right now I'm pooped and really glad for just w-f with the kids. Feeling my age abit (and working 2 jobs at the school probably has something to do with it!)

    That seems like a good idea. We do something similar. We had orientation this past Friday night at the school (before the kids left on buses for "Warrior Week" on Sunday). In addition, they had a pool party/BBQ for all incoming freshmen & other new students last week.

    Lastly, PLEASE do not mention your age -- we are the same age. Pass the Advil.

    That's the way it used to be for me too.

    Today was the first day of school for mine - and the first day of Christian school for my son since pre-school.
