I don't see the wisdom, when one person is "repenting", in bringing into it things others have said, done, &c, as truly genuine repentance. When my 10 year old says he did something wrong it would include "but he! but they! but but but..." then I would remind him, this is about you getting right, so quit dragging others into it.

It's called Manhood 101. Owning up. Confessing.

If you're repenting, leave others statements out of it. That's being a big man, or rather, a man when you can blame self alone, and stand alone when doing it.

Preacher, I think that I understand what you are saying. I was the one that transgressed God's word, I was the one that the call went out too. Therefore I was the guilty party and I couldn't blame anyone but me for the guilt.

Blame doesn't do anything but try to spread your own guilt around. I was guilty "I fessed up" let's do that to each other.

    Peace and prayers

    Jeff

    Amen brother.

Look, when we genuinely repent, we don't drag what others have done into it.

Why not just state our own sin, and our own shame, and our own bad words, ours and ours alone? It's called manhood. It's called confessing your own sins. Not others.

Again, my son, 10, autistic, no longer says "and he...and she...and they....but but but..." when he has sinned, but instead he admits to what he and he alone has done.

No one held my hand at the foot of the cross. I was guilty and I alone.

    He gets the big picture.

    It's called responsibility.

    God bless you brother.

I would go a step further and say that when someone is genuinely repenting you wouldn't even be thinking about what others have done.

Whining and making excuses are just our attempt to cover up our guilt while"repenting", and have nothing to do with real and genuine repentance. I know, I was a master at it.

It all started way back in the garden with Adam and Eve

    Genesis 2
11 He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” 12 The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” 13 Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”[/COLOR]

Excuses lead to death, Real and genuine repentance is a gift from God

    Acts 11
18 When they heard these things they fell silent. And they glorified God, saying, “Then to the Gentiles also God has granted repentance that leads to life.”

    Great topic!

I lack trust in people to just repent to them.
I'm afraid someone's going to tell me with what I deserve to hear.
I'm too prideful and insecure to face my error.
Some children have more faith than I do.
Oh, for more Grace to forgive, trust, obey, and love more.

There is a fine art to an apology or a confession. I always tried to teach my middle school students that.

I would tell them that a finely crafted apology works wonders. Any time one apologies or confesses and then includes phrases that start with words like "but", "however", "if" and "maybe", the apology is completely negated and just makes the issue worse.
    • "I'm sorry that I said you were stupid, but you just make me so mad when you act that way."
    • "I'm sorry if I you think I gossiped about you."
    • "I'm sorry that I disappointed you. Maybe I'll do better next time, I don't know."
I tried to teach my students to own up to their actions.

Are you saying you repent after each time you think you sin?

What you are teaching them is very good, priceless. I appreciate your response. I wish our children had teachers with this much sense!

Genuine repentance involves a change within that is reflected in outward corrected actions.

Interesting thread preacher man. May i humbly suggest that u r confoosin the concepts apology, confession and repentance. Apology is saying sorry that you did something, confession is owning up to what u hav done and repentance is doing the opposite of what u have confessed and apologised for. Ur original post alludes strongly to verbal exchange by words like 'say' and 'statements' so entitling it REPENTANCE is a misnoma. True biblical repentance has also less to do with what u say when u hav done wrong and more to with how u act. Also u keep mentioning manliness as a context of repentance. That is not a biblical concept at all. Repentance is mark of godliness not manliness. So if u really want to be more manly or womanly for that matter u need to first pursue being godly. Thats God's pathway to discovering who we really are and living out who we were meant to be.

    Scarlett O...

Your students are most blessed to have you as their teacher.

If more of us took the time to teach the upcoming generation how to show respect, how to deliver an apology from the heart, how to show love, how to give a complement, how to bring grace and charm into a situation. . .

    Thank you.

    ...Bob
