When was Christmas first made a legal or federally recognized public holiday in the United States of America? I've looked around the web for it and haven't for the info yet.

    Thanks.

It first became a federal holiday in 1870, but it applied only to the District of Columbia. (It was extended to other federal employees in 1885.)

Alabama was the first state to make Christmas holiday - in 1836.
