KJV in the pews, KJV in every member's hands.

I joined in the start up of a church last fall, Crossroads Fellowship Church, don't worry we are Southern Baptists . Were still stocking up everything in a new building. There are currently no pew bibles at the moment. We can't decide between the NKJV or the ESV. The Pastor typically preaches from the NKJV but will switch translations often.

Same here regarding no "pew Bibles" but we give out the NIV, not the NIRV. For the deaf, we have a particular Bible - I can't remember the name of it. Shoot! I wish I could!!

    [Attack snipped and poster warned]

DBFA (Deaf Baptist Fellowship of America) used only the KJV. :D

Too bad an organization is making a group of people use a foreign language Bible. That's sad.

Sad that deaf people let hearing people dictate to them which version to use based upon faulty (at the least) teaching.

We don't have pew bibles. We do have an at cost book shop with inexpensive ESVs and I think the NIV too.
We use the NIV and the ESV primarily in services.

What foreign language might that be? My children, and my 4th grade SS class, speak NO "foreign languages" yet they understand the KJV very well. What you just posted is what is sad.

The deaf do not speak English, no less old English. I will give you an example of my deaf friend's most recent Facebook status and you can see that this is far from English:

"Is soon at beach here in Brooklyn with my baby and _. So excite to see it but dang I need my bed that keep calling me that I should go to sleep. I can't sleep late last night when sun came up... I hard knock myself out and sleep. But guess what? Someone wake my baby up and wake me up at 6am! Grr"

ASL is even more different. Stephanie is trying to speak "hearing" rather than ASL. I'm sure Mexdeaf could help out with this too.

Annsi is correct. I could help out but this isn't the thread to do it. If anyone really wants to know, start a thread and I'll be glad to share my experiences.

You can just go ahead and type out the words as you would sign them. THAT is enough to show it's another language. I still need to work on learning that skill (putting the subject first).

KJV. The pastor uses the KJV and the pew bibles are KJV. However, he does not hold a KJVO position.

    Kjv

KJV, no copyright so they are cheaper to buy. The pastor usually will preach from a KJV or KJV easy reader but will occasionally reference other translations.

Actually, this is untrue. You can buy any Bible version for about the same price as the KJV. While there is no copyright, there is still publishing costs and that is where the true money comes in. Actually, I just looked it up and the KJVs cost more than the NIVs on bulkbibledirect.com

Never put bibles in pews. Encouraged people to bring their own. Besides, I prefer people to pay mind to the sermon rather than flipping pages.

    Cheers,

    Jim

General principle with copyrights. But you are correct in the pricing. What determines price more so than the version is what goes beyond the text - study notes, special editions, etc. I guess a better reason would be that not everyone can agree on a Bible outside of the KJV regardless of readability.
