Which Translation is Appropriate for 12-Year Old

    That is why a reality test with real 6th graders is the best...
    Let them decide which is easier to read...
    Experts no nothing.... that is why they get paid for being experts.... lol

    May I ask if you checked any spelling in your "Webster's 1828 dictiionary" (sic), outta' curiosity, as you were considering the "prinples" (sic) you were "discussinng" (sic) and "hasing" (sic) out" in your own mind, the words you were going to write?

    Oh, yeah! I do hope the 12 year old gets hold of a good spelling book, teacher, and class "ialongn (sic- "Sigh!" - Language Cop) the way".

    P.S. What was the reading level someone spoke of, again? I think I missed it, somewhere.

    Thanks again for the suggestions and the discussion.

    I notice that no one suggested any of these popular, "easy-to-read" versions: TNIV, ESV, HCSB, or CEV.

    I'm not a big fan of TNIV.

    Many who like the KJV enjoy the ESV.

    From all indications, the HCSB is a good translation...it's still gaining a toehold, IMO.

    The CEV is very readable and simply structured, but I don't have enough info to evaluate it theologically.

    These four versions, you mentioned, though, are not a lot like each other.

    I would agree with the premise of this. I am firmly a "traditional texts" man, but if I were a "critical texts" man I would probably use the ESV.

    Like the KJV it can be a bit, I don't know so I'll coin a word, "clunky" in places - it does not always read smoothly. I don't find it an "easy to read" version.

    I second the NLT, but I would get the updated version recently released (NLT2). I also like the HCSB and NCV, the NCV being easier for children than the HCSB.

    Personally, I find about all versions "'clunky' in places", and most do not always read smoothly. And I would offer that sometimes some of the worst of these are the supposedly "easy-to-read" versions, at that. Anyone agree, here, who is not one of the "usual suspects" :rolleyes: in the :BangHead: about uh- I forget, again - "What was that 'onliest' versi...?" [​IMG]

    :thumbsup: My little girl is 9 and has a couple of Bibles she uses for various reasons. At school they use the NKJV because that is what their memory verses are in (private Christian school), and me and her mom bought her a nice NIV "girly" looking Bible for her to use on Sundays. But for her devotions at night she has been using an NIrV (New International Reader's Version), and is getting a lot out of it.
    Hopefully in time i'll get her moved in the the ESV with dear old dad!
