Never heard of it before, Tom, but sounds like a decent school for ministerial purposes. I am not familiar with any of the principals involved with the school, but it seems soundly Reformed in theology and practice, and local church oriented.

    All the best with it.

    Cheers,

    Jim

From what I hear, it's gaining a good reputation. R.C. Sproul is talking it up from what I hear.

I don't trust its quality. It's not even accredited.

A lot of places claim they object to accreditation, but what this oftens means is making a virtue out of a necessity: they can't meet accreditation standards.

That may or may not be true with this school, but if an institution isn't even accredited by the appropriate religious agency (AABC or ATS), I don't bother with it.

AABC doesn't accredit seminaries. ATS accreditation isn't worth much anymore.

Their reason for not seeking regional accreditation seems legitimate enough. I'd rather hear that than hear that they claim accreditation from Bubba's accrediting agency like a lot of IFB schools and others have done. Columbia Evangelical is another school that does not seek accreditation, and one of its founders used to work for accrediting agencies and did (still does?) contract work for investigating fradulent degrees for the government.

Some in the USA seem to make so much of accreditation. If gaining an education for your own values, I don't see the importance of accreditation. If one is seeking an academic career, then federal and Provincial accreditation (Canada) is important, not for the sake of academia, but for job opportunities.

All the best with it, Tom. If I were fifty years younger, I wouldn't hesitate taking studies there.

    Cheers,

    Jim

You mean if you were only 73? [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

I found a short discussion of the school over on the Puritan Board where there are a couple of students. Of course they are presbyterians.

Oh, it has been difficult for distance programs to get themsevles ecredited as it is still a developing concept in educatino and standards haven't really been defined. Just my 43$ an hour opinion.

Joseph Pipa is the president of Greenville Presbyterian Seminary in Taylors, SC, is a graduate (Ph.D.) and adjunct prof at Whitefield. They have a good lineup of Reformed brethren as profs.

Interestingly, a PCUSA minister today told me he esteems Whitefield higher than even the mainline established PCUSA seminaries. Interesting to hear that from a PCUSAer [IMG]

I think RC Sproul and author George Grant have degrees from there.

Allow me to resurrect this thread:

Does anyone have any more information on this school? Aside from the celeb graduates, where have their other graduates gone and what have they done? How well is Whitefield respected in the wider academic community? How would it compare to, say, Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary? What is the tuition at Whitefield?

If you read Walston's review of Whitefield, he points out that at least in 1999 when he wrote the review, there was a rather large percentage of faculty members who received their highest degrees from Whitefield, which is frowned upon by accreditation boards and generally IMO a poor practice for an educational institution. (somewhat academically incestuous, I guess you could say).
