Yeah Right. Abraham's Physical Children Israel, are not the Children of God. Rom 9:8

8That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.

Are Isaac and Jacob physical children of Abraham? Are they "children of the promise"?

Gal. 4:28 Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.

If you answer yes to these two questions you have proved that your interpretation of this text is only a half truth because the fact is that Isaac and Jacob are BOTH - (1) physical children of Israel AND (2) children of promise - CASE CLOSED

That is precisely Paul's point in this context. He is not denying that the promises "pertain" to Abraham's PHYSICAL seed as that is precisely what he affirms in verse 5. However, his argument is that there is an additional qualification to being merely a PHYSICAL seed of Abraham to receive these promises. In ADDITION to being a PHYSICAL seed of Abraham one must also be a SPIRITUAL seed by new birth. This is exactly what Jesus taught Nicodemus who was a PHYSICAL seed of Abraham but in order to see or enter the kingdom of God there must be an ADDITIONAL birth - new birth. Paul is teaching in Romans 9:1-24 exactly what Jesus taught in John 3:3-7.

In addition, just because he is affirming that these promises are to TWICE BORN PHYSICAL seed of Abraham does not mean these promises are not also to the "NATIONS" who are not the PHYSICAL seed of Abraham but are in addition to their physical birth are the SPIRITUAL seed of Abraham through NEW BIRTH as well.

Paul is not denying either but asserting both. You on the other hand are pitting one against the other as though they are in contradiction to one another. Let me bring this home to your mind in this way. Does the context of John 3:3-7 pertain to, directed to, spoken specifically to a PHYSICAL seed of Abraham named Nicodemus? Yes! Now, do the same truths applied to Nicodemus as a PHYSICAL seed of Abraham apply also to you a GENTILE who is not a PHYISCAL seed of Abraham? Yes! Does one contradict the other? No! Why? Because the promise to Abraham contained BOTH - seed from his own loins as a NATION singular and seed not from his own loins but the NATIONS plural.

However, the immediate preceding and foregoing context of Romans 9:8 is dealing with those who are the PHYSICAL seed of Abraham as a NATION. Verse 5 reaffirms the promises are to them "according to the flesh" or the ETHNIC NATION of Israel but only applicable within that NATION to those who are BORN AGAIN according to the Spirit. Isaac and Jacob are PHYSICAL seed of Abraham but are examples unto what kind of physical seed of Abraham pertain the promises - SPIRIT BORN physical seed of Abraham.

All True Believers have part in that Covenant God made with Abraham, for He is the Father of the Faithful Rom 4:11,16

And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also:

Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,

God had promised Abraham an Offspring Gen 17:1-5

1And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.

2And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.

3And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying,

4As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations.

5Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.

All Believers are a Result of God's Covenant made to Abraham that He would multiply him greatly as a people of Faith.

And this Covenant God made with Abraham was a Type or picture of that made with Christ and His seed in Eternity Gal 3:17

17And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect.

Those who believe on Christ are the promised seed of Abraham, but not according to the flesh as Ishmael is a type of, but according to the promise as Isaac was typical of Gal 4:28

28Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.

Paul is speaking to Believers whether jew or gentile !

So Abraham by inspiration is the Father of all them that believe Rom 4:11, and we who do believe are called the children of Abraham Gal 3:7

7Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.

This is a result of God's Promise made to Abraham in Gen 17:2

2And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.

Note " Abraham is the Father of God's People not because He is the biological ancestor of the jews but because he has a family of spiritual children who follow in his footsteps by believing as he did. God promised Abraham that He would bring life from his dead body [Rom 4] Thus Abraham is a living OT prophecy of the Gospel: He was not a Israelite but a pagan, and God had Justified him by Faith" See notes of ESV study bible for quote ! Gal 3:7-8

God had also promised to Abraham that He would Justify his offspring in the nations by Faith Gal 3:8

8And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.

The Children of Promise are the Elect in The Seed Christ !

    Rom 9:8

8That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.

Christ of the Seed of Abraham and David is the Promised Seed who had a Seed in Him !

    Gal 3:16

Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.

Christ was the Seed is seen here also Gal 3:19

Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed[Christ] should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.

Christ had a Seed in Him Isa 53:10

Speaking of Christ Isa writes Isa 53:10

10Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.

So the Children of Promise are Christ's Spiritual Offspring !

No one is denying that as the promise to Abraham concerns both his seed through Isaac as well as his seed among the "nations." However, you are taking one truth to deny the other when both are true.

Your interpretation of Romans 9:8-11 is false because your foundation is false. You begin your foundation by verse 8 when Paul lays the foundation for the context in verses 1-5. Verses 3-5 demand that it is the ETHNIC seed of Abraham as a NATION in contrast to His seed among the NATIONS that is being considered contextually.

You have yet to prove that verses 3-5 speaks about Abraham's promised children among the gentile NATIONS. You have yet to disprove that it is ETHNIC ISRAEL as a nation that verses 3-5 addresses.

Hence, your foundation is wrong as you try to reinterpret verse 8 to deny the true contextual foundation laid by Paul in verses 1-5.

    4 Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises;

5 Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.

The "who are" in verse 4 are the same "whose are" and "of whom" in verse 5. The same "who are" in verse 4 and "whose are" and "of whom" are "according to the flesh" wherein Christ was born? Was Christ born PHYSICALLY ["according to the flesh"] from SPIRITUAL Israel composed of GENTILES and JEWS?????

Simple question: What is the contextual definition of "Israelites" in verse 3 unto "whom pertaineth.....the promises" given to Abraham???????

Remember, I said "contextual definition"!!! The words "who are Israelites" by context refers to those defined in verses 1-3 as Paul has already stated who he is talking about and verse 4 is merely a continuation:

3 For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh: WHO ARE ISRAELITES

Note that the words "who are" in verse 4 refer to the exact same entity as "whose are" and "of whom" and "according to the flesh" in verse 5. According to your rationale, Christ was PHYSICALLY born "acording to the flesh" of SPIRITUAL Israel consisting of Gentiles and Jews because if you define "who are Israelites" in verse 4 as SPIRITUAL ISRAEL inclusive of gentiles then it is the same kind of Israel that the same pronouns in verse 5 continue to speak of "whose are" and "of whom" Christ was born PHYSICALLY ["according to the flesh"].

Those verses apply to the Election within the Nation, these here Rom 11:

7What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded.

God never made promises to those who are not the Children of God Rom 9:8

8That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.

Your straw man response which is nothing but a HALF truth is a perversion of the WHOLE truth. No one argues that the promises were made to NON-ELECT Israelites!!!

You are blind to the fact that there is a TWICE BORN ELECT NATION of Israel to whom these promises are made that contain NO GENTILES. You are blind to the fact that this promised elect NATION is yet future. You are blind to the fact that INDIVDIUALS whether Jews or Gentiles are not the subject under discussion.

You jerk Romans 11:7 out of its context just as jerk Romans 9:8 out of its context.

Christ was PHYSICALLY born "of whom" Paul is speaking about in Romans 9:4-5 and he is not speaking of INDIVIDUALS per se but of ETHNICITY per se. You cannot make the pronouns do double CONTRADICTORY service. The same "of whom" and "whose are" and "who are" refer to the SAME ENTITY under discussion and it is not individual Jews but Israel as an ETHNIC nation. Just as "of whom" are THE FATHERS refers to ETNIC ISRAEL so do "of whom" Christ was born "according to the flesh" refers to ETHNIC ISRAEL. Christ and the fathers were INDIVIDUALS of a greater ETHNIC ORIGIN - national Israel.

He was Physically born of the Virgin Mary, a Jew, however a Jew that was of the Election of Grace within National Israel. The Children of Promise are born first born of the flesh, but they are born later of the Spirit as Children of promise. Its being born of the Spirit that makes them Children of Promise. Christ was born of the elect seed within National Israel. Rev 12:1-4

1And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars:

2And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered.

3And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.

4And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.

5And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.

Christ was born of the Church, the Spiritual Remnant in Israel, and again, the Spiritual Remnant at that time were mostly ethnic Jews..

But Ethnic Israel apart from The Election of Grace, they are not the People of God Rom 9:8

8That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.

Are you telling me that Paul's point in Romans 9:5 was to inform his readers that Mary was the mother of Jesus???????????????????

You know very well that was not Paul's point or intention when he said "of whom." It is not Paul's point to identify any INDIVIDUAL as the origin of Christ or of any of the "Fathers" but rather it is His explicit point to define national ethnicity "according to the flesh."

You have very slyly disregarded Romans 9:5 in order to advance you eisgetical interpretation. Honesty is a virture that seems to be missing in your handling of the scriptures.

The Children of Promise is Israel !

Now having Identified the Children of Promise as the Chosen Seed in Christ, who is Israel Isa 49:3, now I want to show you that the Children of Promise are Israel, for that is the point in Rom 9:6-8

6Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel:

7Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called.

8That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.

It can be seen in the trilogy of scripture, that Israel in vs6 is also called Children and seed in verses 7, and 8

So the Children of Israel or the Seed of Israel are the same !

There is no difference in saying The Children of Israel as in Dan 1:3

    And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king's seed, and of the princes;

    Rev 2:14

But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication.

And the seed of Israel :

    Isa 45:25

In the LORD shall all the seed of Israel be justified, and shall glory.

    Ps 22:23

Ye that fear the LORD, praise him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and fear him, all ye the seed of Israel.

    Jer 31:37

Thus saith the LORD; If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, I will also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, saith the LORD.

So back to Rom 9:6-8, Paul identifies Israel as the Children.

And his caution is that not the Israel of the Flesh or the Children of the Flesh of Abraham merely are or is the Israel which the promises of God pertained to. But the Israel which is of Promise, typified by the Birth of Issac which was a Supernatural Birth produced by God's word of Promise. All the Children of Abraham brought about in that way, are Israel, whether they be ethnic jews or gentiles as it is stated in Gal 4:28 where paul is writing to both jewish and gentile believers in Galatia Gal 4:28

28Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.

Paul is telling these believers, that they were Israel, the Children of Promise Rom 9:8

8That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.

So the Children of Promise are counted for the Seed, what Seed ?

    This seed Isa 45:25

In the LORD shall all the seed of Israel be justified, and shall glory.

The all covers all of both of the jews and of the gentiles ! They all make one seed that has been promised to be saved or Justified in the LORD !

SGB is like talking to a parrot. He simply repeats texts that do not teach what he is saying. He simply repeats his interpretations of texts jerked out of context. He repeately ignores the evidence placed before him. There is no discussion here but just a waste of time. He is wrong or else he would be honest enough to respond to the evidence instead of evading it.

SBG cannot deal with the contextual based objections against his theory. He simply ignores all contrary contextual based evidence placed before him. He resorts to his parot and cut and past type response. He is totally incapable of dealing with a text in its context honestly or exegetically. This is a waste of time to even discuss anything with such a person because there is no honest discussion but just evasion, parrotting and proof text cut and paste responses.

As Isaac was Children of promise !

    Gal 4:28

Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.

Paul here is addressing Believers in General, both jews and gentiles in galatia, but this can apply to all True Believers of all Time, in both Testaments, the Old and New. Isaac is a pattern for all True Believers. Now what made Isaac to become a Believer or Heir of Promise ? Scripture states that He was Heir with Abraham of the same promises Heb 11:9

By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:

Note: This promise is not physical land vs 10

10For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

This city is a Heavenly city that is Promised to the Heirs as in Heb 11:16

But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.

    Heb 12:22

But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,

All True Believers in Christ are Heirs with Abraham as Isaac was. Now when did Isaac become an Heir of Promise ? Was it because He believed ? No, He was the Heir, made so by God before being born Physically. Lets look at scripture. Gen 15:

3And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir.

4And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he[Isaac] that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.

    Gen 17:19

And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.

True Believers are all those whom God, of Abraham's Seed has established His Everlasting Covenant with, which Covenant is based upon the Blood of Christ Heb 13:20

20Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,

Isaacs believing was because he was a Child of Promise, in other words, he did not believe in order to become a Child of Promise, but because he was a Child of promise, He became a Believer, and so it is with All True Believers in Christ Gal 3:29

29And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

    Gal 4:28

Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.

This rightly understood refutes the false teachings of man's freewill in this matter of Eternal Salvation, this has always been a matter of Promise to a specific seed..

When do they be come Children ?

    Heb 2:14

    14Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

What Children ? The Children of Promise ! Rom 9:8

That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.

    Gal 4:28

Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.

The Children given Christ before the world began Heb 2:13

And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me.

The Phrase "forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh of blood" shows that their relationship to God as children was established before or prior to taking on flesh and blood ! So taking on flesh and blood had nothing to do with them being children even though they are appointed to bare the image of the earthy before they bare the image of the heavenly 1 Cor 15:49

49And as we [The Children] have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.

And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.

They were Children of God and Promise in God's Purpose before the world began.

God had purposed their existence in Adam, and in Christ, and both existences must come to pass ! They were in Adam at the Creation of the world, and in Christ before the Creation of the world !

    Children of Promise !

    John 1:12-13

12But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

13Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

These are the Children of Promise !

Abraham had a seed given to him by promise of God, that would be his seed not by blood, nor of the will of the flesh, or the will of man, but by the promise and power of God as in New Birth, and that is what Isaac's birth prefigured, as well as all the children of promise [ Gal 4:28], this was not a flesh and blood progeny, but a spiritual progeny comprised of men and women born out of promise by the promised spirit. God promised Abraham He would pour out of His Spirit on this seed Isa 44:1-3

1Yet now hear, O Jacob my servant; and Israel, whom I have chosen:

2Thus saith the LORD that made thee, and formed thee from the womb, which will help thee; Fear not, O Jacob, my servant; and thou, Jesurun, whom I have chosen.

3For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:

Now notice in this passage who is being addressed, is it not Israel whom I have chosen ? That would be the election of grace in National Israel Rom 11:7

7What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded.

For all ethnic jews were not chosen Matt 22:14

14For many are called, but few are chosen.

But there was a chosen remnant in Israel, and its that portion of Abraham's Isaac's and Jacob's descendants that is promised the Spirit in Isa 44:1-3, and so that necessitated their New Birth, their being born of God, and thus manifested the Children of God. However Abraham's offspring [spiritual] was not limited to just a ethnic jewish remnant, but also included a gentile remnant.

However Abraham's offspring [spiritual] was not limited to just a ethnic jewish remnant, but also included a gentile remnant. Thats why Peter was sent to Cornelius and his house, and it was witnessed that the same Spirit of Promise Isa 44:3

3For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:

Now remember Peter said Acts 11:17

Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God?

That Gift was the Spirit, and so this confirms that non jews were also of Abraham's offspring that would have the Spirit poured out on them.

The Spirit of Promise is key. Therefore any person born of the Spirit of promise, jew or gentile belongs to That Israel, God's Chosen in Isa 44:1

Yet now hear, O Jacob my servant; and Israel, whom I have chosen:

When Paul wrote to the Ephesian believers, he stated that they were sealed with that Holy Spirit of Promise Eph 1:13

13In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, What Promise ? Why that promised Spirit upon the seed of Israel, God's Chosen Isa 44:1-3

And the Ephesian believers was comprised of gentiles. Believing gentiles were recipients of the promised Spirit of Abraham's descendants Gal 3:14

14That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

This again points back to that promise in Isa 44:1 ! Notice again What they are called in vs 1 1Yet now hear, O Jacob my servant; and Israel, whom I have chosen:

Now look at what those in Ephesians 1:13 are called who were sealed with the Spirit of Promise, Eph 1:4

4According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:

So the Chosen in Isa 44:1 is the Same Chosen in Eph 1:4, confirmed by that Spirit of Promise Eph 1:13..

So shall thy seed be !

    Gen 15:1-5

1After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.

2And Abram said, LORD God, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus?

3And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir.

4And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.

5And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.

This promise here to Abraham is not a seed of the flesh, for they are not the Children of God Rom 9:8, but a Seed of Faith. God was promising Abraham Children who would be Like Him, People of Faith. So Paul writes to the Galatians' comprised of both jew and gentile believers this Gal 3:7

Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.

They which are of Faith are the seed or offspring that God promised Abraham in Gen 15:5, yes the Children of promise or promised Children, just as Isaac was !

They are the ones God foreknew !

The Children of promise are the ones meant when scripture says God foreknew them. Rom 8:28-29

28And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

29For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

Remember Paul wrote that God hath not cast away His People He foreknew in Rom 11:1-2

1I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.

2God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew. Wot ye not what the scripture saith of Elias? how he maketh intercession to God against Israel saying,

The Children of Promise are like Isaac, the Child God promised to give to Abraham for a Son, so Isaac was foreknown by God.

    Gen 17:19

And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.

Isaac was born an Heir of Salvation, a partaker of the blessings of the Everlasting Covenant. He did not have to make a Choice, it was God's Sovereign Choice. God promised to establish His Covenant with him, he did not need to consult Isaac. This Everlasting Covenant had to do with the Blood of Christ which was shed according to this same Everlasting Covenant Heb 13:20

20Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,

So this means that Isaac would be a believer in Christ ! His Covenant Blood would be revealed to him as his Salvation.

And all believers in Christ were as Isaac was,Children of Promise Gal 4:28

28Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.

These are God's foreknown People, the Children of Promise. He knew them as He knew Isaac !
